I am in two volunteer organizations that I have been involved in since before freshman year. By the time I graduate, I will have done approximately 500 hours of community service.

Considering that this is a fairly low amount for top schools, is it worth reporting on my app? Or should I just list that I was in those volunteer orgs?

I think it would definitely be in your best interest to put down how many hours you’ve served and the name of the organizations you worked with.

(You may actually have more than 500 hours, too! Those students who apply to the top schools are good at getting credit for every living hour they’ve been alive. He he )

Sure put the number. But you must realize that it can’t be verified, so no real weight can be ascribed to it by admissions committees.

What matters is what you achieved. Describe that. If what you achieved is significant and measurable than a supplementary recommendation is a strong plus to your application

For one of the organizations, we’re required to have 25hr/year. For the other one, I just had to estimate because they don’t require a certain number of hours and they only record hours for certain things.

500 is a lot of hours, but the number of hours is much less important than the impact you (hopefully) made in your community through your volunteer work. For application benefit, focus on impact rather than hours.

Thanks everyone! And I just saw that other people knew exactly how many hours of volunteer work they had done, so I just looked at my resume and estimated.
