I'm not too sure which type of router I should buy. I'm sortov clueless about routers, actually. I'm currently using a desktop that is directly wired to my modem. I'm looking for a router that I can attach to my modem(I think that's how it goes?) and in turn, the router will be wired to my desktop and be wireless to my laptop. (I plan to purchase a Macbook as my laptop, do I need a special router?)

Any wireless router will do…G is the basic, N is faster and has a greater range. Likely your laptop will have N capability but your internet speed is likely not faster than G’s speed (54 mbps) anyway.

We have Macs and Dells in the house. We now use a Netgear N-Router. Our previous Lynksys router didn’t work well with our Mac’s.

Get a router with N-wireless capability. Almost all the laptops now have N-wireless and technology is moving towards that direction.

I know that my older netgear router doesn’t work with a macbook pro. But I think all the newer popular brands support macs now.

Spend approximately $50 (± $30), make sure it’s Wireless-N – better range, better signal, faster response. Sure, there’s increased speed, but unless you’re transferring files wirelessly between two computers on the same network, it’s irrelevant as your DSL/Cable uplink will be much slower than even what 802.11g routers can handle.

In terms of price/value, I recommend the D-Link DIR-615.
