Rowan or Montclair State? Having trouble deciding

I am having trouble deciding between the two. I am looking to major in some kind of education. I'm from New Jersey and I do not care about the distance (Montclair State is closer). Any thoughts would be helpful

I don’t know about Rowan’s program but Montclair is well known for its program to train teachers.

You need to spend some time in both areas. I met a guy working in Rowan’s bookstore who was from up there and asked why he came down here. He said he had wanted to go out of state, but for some reason (money ?) he considered Rowan. He visited and he said it FELT to him like he was out of state. It was far enough away and very different from North Jersey.

It is less congested and our beaches are nicer (Ocean City and Wildwood.) Philly is real close and the mall is 10 minutes away. I’m not sure.

Montclair is a bit more of a commuter campus I think. 60% of fresh live on campus and Rowan about 80% live on campus.

Montclair is probably easier to get in to. (based on SAT scores from collegeboard.org)

rowan has higher tuition, but lower room and board, it comes out pretty even.

Go to collegeboard.org, search for each school, Choose the Majors and Learning Environment look at the Majors and learning environment tab for both schools and choose “all majors”. You will see that ROWAN offers much more for EDUCATION majors. If that is what you are interested in. Please know that getting into the education major at Rowan can be competitive.

Education is NOT listed in Montclair’s most popular majors. It is 19% at Rowan. Rowan used to be Glassboro State and was founded as a teacher’s college. I don’t really know anything about Montclair’s program except what I saw on collegeboard, so you should definitely discuss the education program with someone at Montclair before you make the decision.

Visit both. If you can, visit outside of the “open house”, at a normal time when classes are in session to get a better feel. You might also pop-in on weekends to see how deserted the place is. Choose the one that you can visualize yourself attending.

Rowan, as posted above, was founded as a teacher’s college in 1923. Nice new Education building on campus. Many colleges offer education majors, and Stockton’s program is growing in South Jersey. You also might check it out.

College is not a place to do online shopping. It’s probably the biggest investment you’ll ever make. So, try it on before you buy it.
