First timer here… read through the forum but still have some questions. Hoping those who have gone through the process can share insight and suggestions. This is the summer before my daughter’s senior year and things have been very quiet in terms of coaches responding to emails/ recruit questionnaires. Initially there was some email exchanges where coaches asked for test scores and transcripts. DD has good scores and GPA, as well as good rowing resume and has been updating the coaches. She also met them at the club nats college fair. We haven’t gotten any emails back from the coaches in a month or so. Is it safe to assume they are not interested? at what point can we determine that DD is not in contention for recruitment? Is there a timeline that things happen? (i.e. Official visit offers by certain date, regular emails from coaches, etc). Thanks all.
D1 varsity, D3 varsity or Club - either D 1 or D3? Usually pre-reads are happening now, so quiet isn’t likely good - at least that’s how it worked for DD17 XC/Track student athlete
As far as rowing goes you should be having email exchanges during the summer. Many coaches will even call if you are too far for UV during the summer. It makes a good impression if your daughter can go out to visit the schools/programs that interest her and arrange to meet either head or assistant coach. I would suggest your daughter send some follow up emails to coaches she’s previously contacted. If she has any updates to share (summer rowing results/updated test scores) it’s an easy way to initiate another conversation. OVs are being offered now so she needs to be persistent and show a interest.
Some of the coaches take part of August off so get some emails in now.
What are her stats? Which schools interest her?
Thank you so much, tonymom. Her ACT is 31, GPA is A minus range. SAT 2’s are in mid 600 range. She’s looking at D1 schools with strong academics (Duke, UVA, Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton, etc etc) She’s a coxswain so there’s no erg score. Her rowing resume is pretty good… top 10 at youth nats, top 5 at Stotes, etc. We are definitely going to visit some schools if that helps. This whole process is stressful because I don’t know how it goes or what to expect.
I’d say her stats are fine for the schools listed with maybe the exception of Princeton. The subject SAT scores may be too low for Princeton. I know the men’s coaches there seemed very fixated on stronger test scores as opposed to GPA.
Being a coxswain is it’s own particular challenge as those spots are very limited. For my son’s team many of the coxswains are walk ons with the exception of one who was recruited but ended up getting into school on his own and was secured a spot the team. A positive for a young woman is she could cox for both me and women’s teams.
As mentioned before have her reach out via email to coaches. She should speak to why she is interested in the particular school as well as why she’d be an asset to the team.
Good luck! Keep us posted!
