RPI vs Case Western

24k a year, 12.5 per semester

That’s pretty good. That’s what my son got. The highest I’ve seen is $125k total at Case. Good luck with the decision! :+1:t3:

BTW, $12.5k per semester is $25k per year, $100k total.

Also, I am shocked that they offered you that much, but they deferred you to Spring.

What are your total costs at each?

Whoops math was off. I meant 12k a semester :joy:
Before the federal loans rpi is 22k a year, case is 32k a year. Idk why, but my parents want me to take out federal loans regardless of where I end up so their contribution to each school’s tuition is different based on the cost. For rpi, they r willing to cover 15k and I take out 5k a year with 2k work study. At case, they r willing to cover 20k a year so that means 10k a year loans plus 2k work study. Don’t ask me why they do this way I don’t know either…

I honestly don’t know why they waitlisted me but gave so much merit either. College applications work in mysterious ways.

Because there’s the “sticker” price - but then there’s the “transaction” price that they are seeking to hit.

They know that in order to get their spots filled, they’re going to have to discount.

The same way, when you buy a car and it’s not a super hot car, they have cash incentives.

Truth is, they know they’re never getting full price - but it’s out there for intl students or ED that have no need, etc.

That’s not the typical MO at Case. They usually reserve that level of merit for high stats students in order to entice them to build their ranking and reputation further. That award and waitlist are an odd combination. Awards that high are uncommon at CWRU.

Probably so that you also have some skin in the game when you make your choice. You can get a good degree with less personal leverage, but $40k would not be considered unreasonable for engineering. That said, less debt is always easier.

Or - come to think of it - if the OP has a work study as mentioned, it may be need aid he received - although the amount mentioned you noted is similar to what others get merit wise…or could be a combo.

My kids don’t qualify for need based but I believe if you have a work study, you do.

They might have been. New world after COVID. And they may figure they have to make a spring admit more enticing. Also, the OP qualifies for fin aid. At many schools, there are “merit” scholarships that are tied to fin aid (so are more like fin aid grants).

uhh i received 24k merit and around 19k need based a year plus the work study. Most of my need based aid is due to the fact that I have siblings in college at the same time I am in college.
