it'd be cool if a lot of us got accepted--even better, the ideal state in which we all get in

i don't think anyone can want rsi too much

yea, two different people started the groups at about the same time. oh well. there's also a plain RSI group and then an RSI alumni group too. gosh, so many facebook groups for everything now.

and the three things was a joke from a skit that some staff members put on.

the eugenics doesn't happen until AFTER opening convocation. ;-)

Hi, I'm just visiting from the TASP thread ^_^

When do you guys find out about RSI acceptance?

Technically, March 31st, but I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say I really wish it'll come sooner, so I'd be able to know and then made solid summer plans. I'm thinking positive. May the good news come as soon as possible :)

Oh ok, thanks :)

it's best to make multiple summer plans, just so you always having something good waiting on the back burner. i had like 4 different possibilities of things i could do last summer. luckily, RSI was the one i got.

yea.. my back-up plans right now is VA Governor's School.. of course, I might not get into it either.. I need a plan C.. for my school I have to do a research project or internship.. my friend did one at Raytheon last summer.. so even though I'm not a fan of military contractors, she got to work on circuit troubleshooting and constructing precision (clean room--- 100 particle/ft^3) lasers for possible future use in a fusion reactor)-- sounds fun to me.

does anyone know any other research programs that i could apply to along with RSI? I rechecked all my "backup" programs today and the deadlines for all of them apparently passed T_T. stupid me >< way to totally neglect other applications sigh

reprimands/castigates self

I wonder what the earliest day is that decisions have come out?

Hmmm...anyone know?

laishronx2: I don't know any other research programs, but you can always contact near-by research institutes, labs, and universities. I've found that as long as you are not trying to make the mentor do everything, they will help you.

in Wisconsin, the winner of JSHS found a solution for permanently dissolving carbon nanotubes, and in the process invented a machine that counts how many photons are given off, one more significant digit than the best one U.S. had previously. (So he says). He is home schooled, but he found a mentor who gave him this idea. But he had an advantage because technically he is a high school sophmore and a college sophmore at the same time. crazy kid.

I am from Wisconsin and I was wondering if it matters where you are from when they make the decision?

Look back a few pages (around post 430s). There was as discussion about this there. Here is some information that you may find interesting (copied from someone else's previous post).

State No. of Alums

California 75

Virginia 58

New York 56

Texas 46

Illinois 43

Maryland 43

Pennsylvania 30

New Jersey 29

Minnesota 27

Ohio 25

Michigan 24

Georgia 24

Massachusetts 23

Florida 22

Kansas 21

Arizona 20

Thanks for the information. Do you think that I have a better chance since Wisconsin is not on the list?

Whoops...I meant around posts 340s, not 430s. Go back and read those posts. It will provide alot of insight. =)

So the letter stating whether we made it or not might come before mar 31?

those state numbers are apparently outdated...

and i don't know if the state matters, because we got two idahoans last year, but no rhode islands or maines or georgias or lots of other states. they try not to take more than 3 people from the really top schools (TJ for example) but besides that, there's quite a spread from all over.

Spudman, you seem to know alot. What matters more your scores or research experience?

research experience shouldn't matter very much, because the point of RSI is to develop your research skills. the thing is, many people go into RSI having had research experience, because it's just kind of what ends up happening.

it also depends on what scores you mean. if you have a whole bunch of test scores that rival others, aside from just SAT's (like a bunch of AP's), then those can really count in your favor. but i think the essay stuff carries a lot of weight too, especially as a way to separate all the really amazing candidates who apply.

i agree with spudman. if your psat is above a 220, and your grades are good, it mainly depends on your essay.
u don't need prior research experience, but i do think it helps.
