Hi everyone! I'm a rising junior right now and I am going to apply for RSI 2014.

Are there any things I need to keep in mind specifically in order to apply for the program? And how much would the standardized test scores weigh in, exactly?

Well as far as I know, you won’t get in if you have scores under 230 PSAT(generally). I also saw some exceptions on previous threads. Concisely, standardized scores are a make or break factor

I would encourage applicants not to be discouraged if their scores are outside of the recommended range. Plenty of applicants have gotten in with scores outside of the recommended range. Best of luck!

Everyone should take the PSAT, if anything because it could qualify you for a National Merit Scholarship (absolutely unrelated to RSI). It’s up to you to decide whether to take the SAT before you apply to RSI. I had not yet taken the SAT when I applied to RSI. If you think you would do better on the SAT than you did on the PSAT, then you should probably take the SAT before you apply to RSI.

So, I just got back my PSAT scores today and I only have a 210… (I will work hard and improve upon the score for the SATs, but it is really not ideal.)

I’ve been wanting to apply for RSI for quite a long time, and it was one of my dreams to be able to attend there. (Everyone I have met who has been in the program said that it was the best experience of their life.) But now, I’m not sure if I should even try because I might be potentially just be wasting my efforts. I’ve been set on applying for SSP and MITES this year, and those are admittedly easier to get in. I’m not particularly extraordinary in anything, but I’m currently in Calc BC and all the science APs. I do some Sci Oly, Academic Super Bowl, Science Fair, and spent a summer in Harvard SSP a few months ago.

What I’m saying is, I know a lot of you would say that it’s definitely worth it to just try and apply, but I can’t afford applying to something I wouldn’t be able to get in for certain. I want to fully utilize my summer, and applying for RSI would stop me from applying to one other program. Any suggestions?
