One more question… when the application specifies that CEE must recieve it by Jan 6th, does that also mean that everything being sent by the SCHOOL must reach them on Jan 6th, like for instance official transcripts and score reports? I guess what I’m saying is, must I, if it hasnt been sent out at this point, have my school overnight their materials?

^Burningflame, that is correct. I asked my school to send in their part 2 weeks ago, and I’m going to ship my stuff on Jan. 4 with overnight shipping…YAY FOR PROCRASTINATION xD

I also have another question for you guys. When filling out the application, there’s a part that asks for “Grade Enrolled”. What the heck does that even mean? o_0

EDIT:

While filling out the application, I came across another part I had no clue on. What does "Principal’s Professional/Administrative Title: " mean??

Seriously…grade enrolled is asking what grade you’re in.

Not sure about the title.

OMG I feel so dumb…the part under grade enrolled had “(Fall 2011)”, and that threw me off. Now that I think about it… Facepalm

Yeah anyone else know about the title?

And I think Jimmy emailed RSI about including a resume…could you get back to us Jimmy?

They haven’t responded yet T_T. I did it through their online inquiry form, but I’m assuming that it’s because it’s the holiday season.

By the way, who reads the applications? Adults, college kids, or professors, etc?

Oh that makes sense =/

I’m pretty sure the professors/mentors read the application.

Anyone else having a hard time choosing with Research field to pick? It’s so difficult because they tell you not to make them related to each other. I also want to pick something that’s interesting and do-able by me.

SO. DIFFICULT. TO. PICK.

Can there be overlap between our two subfields? I’m finding difficulty choosing a subfield for biophysics…(I’m doing biochemistry for the other field.)

anyone else have like, NO CLUE WHAT THE **** THEY WANT TO WRITE ABOUT? haha you guys are so on top of things…

wait… does the school have to send the transcript, scores, etc. separately? Or can we just put their stuff into a sealed envelope which we send with everything else?

@sadface, I’ll have to tell you that psat scores don’t mean that much. in fact, there are many who have got in with scores much lower than the “recommended” scores

Dumb question: we have to provide the postcard ourselves, right?

@doublesex: bay area? or elsewhere in cali?

The “title” thing: That’s just whatever the principals official job title is. For example, the principal at my school’s official title is “headmaster” (…I still have no idea why after four years at said school). I think it’s just so the CEE know the proper way to address him/her should they need to contact him/her.

Who reads the applications: I can’t speak with authority here, but it seems to be some combination of CEE staff and RSI alumni/staff. The professors may read applications at some point but if so I’m fairly certain that would be more for matching students to mentors than for admissions decisions.

Subfields: Ideally, the subfields should be at least reasonably different. I think the only “absolute,” though, is that they fall under different general fields.

@bioperson: The application does indeed state “School should send certified transcript and test scores” which would seem to suggest they’re supposed to be sent from the school :/

I feel like you’ve already answered this for me, atomicbaseball, and I probably know the answer myself somewhere deep inside, but as far as the essays, do they prefer crafty and engaging or short and concise?

This is a really stupid question. Does my school have my SAT and PSAT scores with the transcript? If not, how do I get school-certified test scores?

Hey guys, I asked this before but didn’t get a response. It says on the website, to both turn in the essays online and through mail. How exactly does one turn in the essay online?

Going with snipercat’s question, how does one print the application page if it’s just in plain web form?

@burningflame: I think all they really want as far as writing ability is well-written and intelligent. Crafty/engaging is good in that it keeps them from getting bored as they read the application, but being concise is a virtue as well. As long as you get the required information across, sound intelligent, and follow length requirements, write them as you see fit.

@jimmy8907: Obviously I can’t speak about your school specifically. I know my school had some way to attach scores to the transcript. Your school may not have an official way of doing so, but they should have some record of your scores. Just have them make a copy of said record and include it with the official transcript that they send.

I can’t answer any questions about the workings of the online form, as I don’t have access to it and they didn’t do it that way last year.

Another quick question: Since I am taking AP Computer Science in school, would I mark that I am advance in Java?

I mean AP is college level after all, and Comp Sci is ALL about Java…

@Bioboy12: I think it’s pretty open to interpretation with that part of the application. Do you think you’re advanced? Then mark advanced. I’m not sure how much AP Comp Sci covers. Without anything beyond the class I’d probably call it “intermediate” rather than “advanced”, but I think that’s just me. I do have a tendency to lean towards the lower end of things like that.
