RSI 2015

@MichaelPemulis‌
Yes, ISEF Best in Category would definitely help a lot.

@MichaelPemulis‌ what category is the Best in Category award in?

@caltech411‌ I’m pretty sure RSI kids won’t be trouble, lol… ;D

@dpandah Any advice on my rec problem?

@daniiiiis‌ The issue is that I don’t know your relationship with your teachers. I had a similar issue with my college apps and the truth is that no one else can give you any helpful advice on this. Generally, you want recs from teachers that know you well and will spend time on your recommendation letter. Think about it carefully before making a decision.

@Newdle We all human tho

@dpandah‌
It’s in Physics & Astronomy. I specifically had a physics project.

@Newdle‌ @dpandah‌ Thanks for your replies. My parents heard that at RSI there is not as much supervision as there is at other summer programs so they are worried. I am not allowed to talk to girls and my parents want me to do a Siemens winning math project. Do you have advice and if you get in can you pick your roommate I have never been away from my parents before

Since this program is highly selective should anyone with top SAT, GPA, EC but no recearch or math involvement even try to apply?

@caltech411
Trust me when I say that girls will not stop you from accomplishing what you and your parents want you to accomplish. If something happens with a girl, just don’t tell them. Research and girls are not mutually exclusive.

@dpandah‌ Lol, that’s what happened with one of my summer programs :3… I won’t go into the details >_<…

@caltech411‌ Dude, you’re going to have to confront girls sometime! You might as well get a good introduction with genius gals XD!

I’m a bit scared to see my PSAT scores D:! I felt like I did well, but you never know >_<…

How important are the recommended psat scores? I already know I screwed up 1 math and if the curve is the same as last year that’s down to 75 already…

Does anyone know how important Psat score is? I am pretty sure I have +225 but I dont think I have super high score like 235… I have taken only two AP exams and got 5s. I did take three SAT IIs and got all 800s. I don’t know if my scores are enough for such a competitve program. Also this “programing experience” makes me freak out cuz I never liked sitting down and doing computers for hourzzzz… Any thoughts on this?

Question: Are we to print and mail the application physically after we fill it out?

@PoisonIvy20‌
Da.

@dpandah Okay, thank you. I kind of knew that only I could tell when I asked, but it’s a tough decision >.> Thank you for responding. Good luck with your college apps.

@caltech411 I wish I could tell your parents to chill. It’s not like you won’t see any girls at college ever. But my advice is to just be mature about it, be sincere to them and make clear to them that obviously girls won’t get in the way of your aspirations.

Hey everyone,

I’m back – sorry for the hiatus. I have too much to read through, so please re-post any lingering questions that may not have been addressed.

Okay, that’s a lot of questions.

@seal16 They want to see some sort of interest and focus in science/math as far as I’m aware, but if you have a very strong application otherwise I’m sure you still have a fighting chance.

@Mjag1898‌ As far as I understand it, PSAT scores are used as a basic marker of ability. If you have other things that can show that you’re really good at math that can balance out a 75 on the math section, you should be okay. I screwed up the math section my year as well when I included a degenerate triangle in the triangle inequality :confused: (78/80).

@jhgong I don’t think PSAT scores are that important and your SAT subject test scores probably help show that you’re competent.

@PoisonIvy20‌ Yes.

@caltech411‌ Damn, those are some hardcore parents. You probably can’t pick a roommate but you definitely won’t get a girl for a roommate if you’re a guy. Generally, you will bIn the event that a girl tries to talk to you, you could just walk the other direction.

Does anyone know if they plan to take one person from every state?

For instance, is that a priority for them so that someone that may not be as qualified (think: good SATs, good grades, good research, no exceptional awards) from a underrepresented state will be chosen if they are the top candidate from that state, or will RSI not take anyone from that state?

Thanks!!!

@dpandah‌
Thank you! I guess I just focus on my essays now!

@tooty44‌
There is a little bit of affirmative action based on state – but last year there were many states with no Rickoids and many states with 4-5 Rickoids.
