RSI 2020

What’s the chance of getting into RSI?

my guy friend is going for this this year, best of luck to all you guys!! i’ve never done stem research so i’m out of the equation, but i hope everything works out for you guys!

@frnchtoast
Well about a 3% acceptance rate

For the first prompt where it asks about the problem that interests you. Do I have to explain how I would research that problem or can I just show a deep understanding of what the problem is?

@hinterland
I would put questions about the topic, but no, do not step by step explain how you would research that. Just show you understand the research and the problem.

I noticed that the blog said that the psat reading should be 700+ and math should be 740+.

My psat math is 760 but my psat reading is 690; however, my Sat reading is 720 and the math is 710. The psat score is more recent.

Which score should I send? How much will a 690 in reading/writing reduce my odds?

@hinterland
I would send both. They have different sections for SAT and PSAT
I really don’t think it will.

Are letters of recommendation due on Wednesday night? One of my letter-writers wasn’t able to start until recently…

@onezerosixtwo
I heard it wasn’t too hard to complete. Hopefully, you can get a hold of them and urge them to finish it.

@onezerosixtwo
and yes the letters of recommendations are due Wednesday

Do I have to cite things that I refer to in my first question?

@hinterland
I don’t believe you have to properly cite them. I suggest saying A scientist from B university said C. Or from the Y website. That is what I did for mine.

@Luna123LC OK, thanks for the info!

@Luna123LC where do you find the recommendation deadlines?

I am REALLY pushing it to last minute this time. I’ve been wanting to apply since 8th grade and I’m still not done with my personal essays. I would say chance me but maybe just let me suffer.

Caucasian/other race female
From Colorado
Small public STEM School

PSAT10: 1380(yeah I know, real gross isnt it)
UW GPA: 3.94 and WGPA: 4.5
I have taken 4 AP’s and don’t have test scores for them because there was a shooting at my school a day before we were supposed to take them. Oh well, I got all A’s in them though.

President of Girls in STEM(career opportunities for girls going into STEM fields)
Co Founder of my non-profit called Birds Across Borders(an initiative internationally connecting students, professionals and birders)
I presented at the American Ornithological Society 2019 Conference in Alaska for Birds Across Borders(My team were the youngest presenters the conference has ever had, it was so exciting!!!)
I also presented with my team to the Raptor Research Foundation Conference in Fort Collins, CO
Science National Honor Society

Volunteering:

None

Research: informal unpublished research on American Kestrel population and factors of nesting choice, and Black-billed magpie feeder behavior but I’m really interested and Botany and 3D Biological Modelling, I just haven’t gotten the opportunity yet to do formal research.

All in all, my chances are super low but darn it if I’m not passionate and dedicated to learn more no matter what it takes. Even if it isn’t RSI I’ll find some way to make my impact, improve how we humans view and respect nature, and hopefully teach the next generation the same thing. Good luck to all of you and remember no matter if you get in or not or no matter your stats, you all have so much worth and all can do amazing things. No one can stop us!!!

I’ve also had two jobs, one at a Space Camp that teaches manned space flight to ages 6-16 for which I became the first female flight director(head instructor) in their 30 yr history and a tutor for english and math for elementary students at a chain tutoring center.

Hi! does anyone know the exact time the application is due?

Nevermind, it says the time left on the top left of the application site :slight_smile:

@Joanna54544

You have good ECs and experiences. Just write good essays. Don’t worry. Also, no one can really chance someone unless they see their stats and essays.

@secretscreenname
I would’ve helped but glad you figured it out!

Wow I’m really cutting it close with deadlines haha.

Anyway, I have a 740 from my PSAT/NMSQT Math section, which I would say is pretty okay, but my SAT score just came back and my Math section is at a 690. Should I bother uploading my SAT Math score in addition to my PSAT/NMSQT or do you think having a 690 will damage my chances?

Also, would it be alright to have two different subfields in the same research field or should I spread myself out? (And also are there any fields other than biology/physics/chemistry, like are mathematics and the social sciences included, or any other stuff? Sorry about the number of questions, since I feel like they’re kind of dumb, haha.)
