Rules for taking AP exams when you haven't taken the AP class?

I know it's possible, and I was wondering what the official rules for taking an AP Exam when you didn't actually take the AP class/self studied, because I am bilingual and am fluent in German, but my school does not offer German, so I could not have taken the AP German class at school even if I had wanted to. I think it is still a possibility for me to take the AP German Exam, though, somehow?

Also, if I wanted to self study a different AP course that my school does not offer, such as AP Computer Science, would I be able to take the AP Comp Science Exam after I self studied and became proficient in the subject?

I looked on the College Board website for answers to my questions, but they're either not there or I'm exceptionally bad at navigating through their website, haha. Thank you in advance. :)

If you’d like to take it, you’ll need to find a school in your area that is offering the test or has space for you to test there. If your school does not offer it, ask your counselor or AP coordinator as to where it is offered.

And yes, you can self-study and score very well indeed. I essentially self-studied Euro - teacher was boring, and I slept through class every single day. Got a 5 last year on it. If you find that you are having trouble with some sections of the course or your prep book isn’t clear, you can always try to contact professors at your local university for assistance.

Good luck!
