Run / walk exercise: COUCH-2-5k

Since the weather is cooling a bit (at least in early morning), I thought I’d bump this thread. Wondering if anybody has started (or is thinking about starting) a new walking or walk/run habit…

Tomorrow I will walk/run with another woman about my age who posted on NextDoor for training partner. It’s my way to pay back those who encouraged me when I was in a couch-2-5k class 5 years ago.

@Colorado_mom that’s great! I am much more motivated to walk/run when I have a partner holding me accountable.

Welcome to the discussion @Helena_Mashalova

Per running shoes, agree with the referenced advice to visit a running store. That’s how I found some Saucony that worked well. Five years later I’m on my 5th pair of similar Saucony (their style name/numbers change over time). I have bought most at same place, sometimes on sale… and one pair of same style/size online.

I’m back from the run with the gal met via NextDoor. It was nice to have a change of pace from my normal solo podcast runs. We did mostly running, some walking. She appreciated the encouragement, but l pointed out that she will likely soon be faster than me. (Ha, she didn’t even need the extra water flask I brought along, remembering my first thirsty attempts at walk/run). I left it up to her whether she wants to try to set up future runs. For me it was good to have a reason to get an early start on the day.

What was/is her story about wanting to take up running? Had she run in the past?

Yep, she said she used to run 10k races Just got out of the habit while raising kids, who are now teenagers.

The NextDoor gal suggested another run this week. It’s a superb time of year to run. Alas, I’m in “rest” mode due to some heel pain that is likely Plantar Fascitis. I’ve done a bit of cycling and will
probably walk this week … but it may be some time before I give running a try again. Of course I’ve always maintained that walking hobby

… walking is really healthy, great lifetime habit (endorsed by my 95 year old Dad who still gets out to walk). But I personally prefer running and miss it.

For some reason I can’t reply to @Colorado_mom …… I don’t really know the answer to this, but if you are covering the same amount walking as running (I don’t actually know that you are) it might cause one to think….wouldn’t it be similar in impact to your plantar or whatever it is? So point being, do you think there is something with running that you are doing that is enhancing the pain? Like are you heel striking??

There is definitely more impact with running than walking. I can walk a long way and never feel a twinge in the tendon that goes down the inside of my leg and then under my foot. But if I run much at all, even on the treadmill, it bothers me. :frowning:

Yes agree on the impact but sometimes it’s also worthwhile to consider your gait in addition to your shoe support etc.

Certain running injuries have to do with strike.

And adjust shoe choice to match one’s gait.

Sorry it is hard to reply to my post… CC has been sometimes giving me challenges recently.

My avoidance of running is based on the reading I’ve done with advise such as “ Rest your foot as much as possible , avoid running, excessive walking and long periods of standing”. When I start walking this week, I plan to start with shorter distances than my usual 5k (or more) runs.

To be honest, I’m a bit more cautious than I would be if we were not traveling in a few weeks. Flying to my niece’s big wedding in Nashville (with my kids in attendance too - yay!). Hubby and I splurged on a 4 night trip, with some sightseeing too. Had planned to do some higher-than-usual heels (still nothing crazy) but will err toward caution there.

The frustrating thing is that aggravating factors can be excess weight (but I’m BMI 22) or increase in aggressive exercise (but I’ve been running much less than usual this summer) or worn out shoes (but I’ve been in a new pair of supportive running shoes, same style as prior). Although hubby is skeptical, I do think one factor is the odd toe-lift move I’ve been doing to help get our sagging fence gate to open. When gardening, I sometimes go back/forth thru gate between front and back yard multiple times per day.

I had a trifecta of foot injuries this spring that included PF. You might try rolling your arch on a frozen water bottle for pain relief. I was in a boot as I also had a stress fracture and posterior tibial tendinitis, so I couldn’t walk. Biking, swimming were allowed. PF can take a long time to heal. When I could walk/run, I got a brace specifically for the arch and PF that helped a lot.

Hope you are all enjoying some lovely autumn weather. Today was a little cooler her in CO, but we had splendid days last week.

Although not running out of caution for heel pain (likely Plantar Fascitis), I have done some walking and biking and gardening. Mostly no pain, except sometimes when I bend over… ha, and now I have instinct to lift foot first. I do wear my new oofos flip flops around the house, avoid walking barefoot on wood floors.

I’ve been doing an ocassional 3 mile walk around the neighbor. I still use the MapMyRun for pace a 0.1km intervals, and yesterday I threw in ten scattered running segments (so walks, 10 runs). It did feel good to run again. Alas, I was lazy today and stayed indoors. Resting up for tomorrow, a lot of yardwork while outdoors have helpers here for leaves and gutter cleaning.
