Rural Course Load

Hello, I'm from a very rural area of Virginia and I go to school in Kentucky. I have heard that it is recommended that an applicant take at least four years of one foreign language. If my school only offered two years, would this put me at a large disadvantage? I'm sending in my application tomorrow so I was curious!

Thanks!

you don’t get penalized for not taking classes that your school doesn’t offer.

However, with only 2 years of a foreign language, you will need to take more at W&M so you can meet the W&M graduation requirement of 4 semesters (equal to 4 years of HS language)

Bittersweet maybe… At least I was wanting to take language classes in college! :)

This question was addressed in the response to your “Do I have a Shot” post. We expect applicants to take the most demanding set of courses that are available to them. We do not expect you to take courses that are not offered to you and we don’t penalize you for not taking courses not avaialble to you. Just make sure that your counselor includes a school profile with your transcript so that we now advanced language isn’t offered. If they don’t, use the additional information section of the Common App to note which courses are not available to you.

However, one suggestion might be, given you’re taking Dual Enrollment courses, is to maybe enroll in a language course (usually the 201 level for the third year and the 202 level for the fourth year equivalent) over the summer and you can note in your application that you plan on taking some language courses over the summer.
