Rural & Urban

I haven't been able to find which schools are rural and which ones are urban (or in between). But it seems like many of you have been to the campus', or just have more information than me, soooo... care to share?

Please copy and paste this list every time you update it. I'll try to keep the list in this original post updated too. Feel free to add more schools, I only added the ones I was concerned with. ;)

Adding a comment about Deerfield!

ST. PAUL’S SCHOOL: not in the middle of no where. In Concord, NH capital. 50 minutes from Boston 20 minutes from Manchester
DEERFIELD: in a small rural town surrounded by cow pastures but not close to any big towns. (Actually, right off a big highway and not too far from Springfield and Northhampton. Nowhere near as isolated as Hotchkiss.)

TAFT- Seems to located in a similar kind of situation as Choate, in a large town. Not sure about walking to shopping or the train.

What is totally incredible about Deerfield is that it was settled in 1673. If you think it’s isolated now, imagine when you had to walk from Boston…

Exeter is also close to Portsmouth (15 minutes) and about an hour from Boston.

Wow!! Thanks, guys!

Would somebody care to elaborate on Andover? “Nice suburb” doesn’t paint a particularly vivid image in my mind. SPS, too.

Also, I just realized I can’t edit my old post. Sorry. x_x

From the impressions the descriptions give, am I right to order it from Urban -> Rural as:

Taft/Choate (middle of large town)
Lawrenceville/Andover (suburban city)
Exeter (small town)
Loomis (island, 1 mile from small town)
Deerfield (small rural town)
Hotchkiss (absolute middle of nowhere)
?

Thanks again!

RE Hotchkiss: Oh c’mon – there’s a Mobil station right there in Lakeville!!!

Loomis is not really an island…it can just become one if the river floods badly enough.

ST. GEORGE’S: Newport, RI, case closed.

Andover is located just off the downtown of an outer Boston suburb (it’s on the second of two beltways that loop around the city). It’s an upper middle class town so there are a number of shops and restaurants as well as a commuter rail station for the 45 minute ride into Boston. Access to a shopping mall or movie theater, however, requires a cab ride or, on some weekends, the school has a shuttle. The neighborhood near the school is made up of nice, well-maintained Victorian or similar era homes, many of which are owned by the school.

I was just looking at this list and realized that I have either had children attend, or had extended family members serve as faculty, at FIVE of these schools! To clarify about Loomis being on an island- it is technically, I guess, a peninsula at the confluence of the Farmington and Connecticut rivers. There are only two roads that go in and out, and one that makes a loop around the campus. One of the roads goes over a bridge that was damaged and rebuilt recently in one of the floods. The other leads to a main street in the town. St. Georges is in gorgeous Newport- but not really walking distance to any commercial area except for a convenience store. I wouldn’t call any of these schools “urban.” The only “urban” boarding school I have ever visited is Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia.

Ok, you have that 15-20 minute walk by the beach to be in Newport proper. Middletown has grown a lot since the 70’s with more there than others.

We could start up the prettiest campus thread again- my favorites right now, I think, are Deerfield, St. Georges and Tabor. Maybe because I like historic villages, and ocean views!

We’re hijacking the OP’s thread but I’ll nominate St. Paul’s, after SG of course. The only thing in Deerfield is EBS,they do have the ski mountain. You’ll learn where Cieslik’s farm is when the wind is blowing in the right direct.

Well I visited Exeter Andover Deerfield and SPS. In order.

SPS (blew me away)

Exeter (when I visited I didn’t think I’d see better)

Andover (I liked the city the best also)

Deerfield…
