Disclaimer: I have never been to these schools, I’ve just picked up the information on CC, their websites, and BoardingSchoolReview. All of the following schools are excellent, so you’ll be getting a great education no matter where you go!

Deerfield
Con: In the middle of no where, very rural.
Pro: Very preppy and athletic, most selective boarding school at 17%.

Exeter
Con: Kids considered nerdy, high strung, too focused on academics.
Pro: Academics and facilities top-notch; HUGE on Harkness method. More math and science oriented.

Andover
Con: The school is really big, so you could get lost in the crowd.
Pro: Great academics and a bunch of extracirriculars! More humanities oriented.

St. Paul’s
Con: It has a reputation of giving off a “creepy” vibe.
Pro: Campus is huge and beautiful, really nice people.

I don’t know much about Choate or Hotckiss!

haha its funny you picked those schools to elaborate on because those are my top schools. honestly, from the people I met, andover seemed more of the “nerdy” type than exeter. we all have our inner nerd and maybe my inner nerd was closer to the exonians, or maybe i just met the wrong people at andover

As for Hotchkiss, the pro: beautiful campus and facilities (especially athletic sites, many of the dorms, e.g. Edelman, and all of the music areas); 240 courses for 580 students; huge endowment per student. The con: THS suffered a drop last year in SSAT’s for entering students from 93% average ( once highest of all HADES schools) to 83% ( sign that THS is becoming more of a jock school than years past?); and college placement, although better than Choate, doesn’t seem as strong as other HADES schools. Still, a great school. (My son is a first year lower mid there, and he absolutely loves just about everything connected with Hotchkiss: the classes, the sports, the international flavor of the school, the tight community, the excellent teachers, the EC’s, the great programs, speakers and entertainment offered at THS, etc.)

Re; Hotchkiss Do you think it’s a shift towards a jock culture or a need for more FP? I don’t know if the % of new admits on FA changed last year or not. I know it did at Exeter. Maybe something similar happened at Hotchkiss. If it is for athletic recruits, I’d have a problem - for financial, not so much.

neato, the SSAT drop could be based on drop in FA. Because, I understand, the FA decreased from 37% to 27% for new students last year and the SSAT’s dropped from 93 percentile to 83 at the same time, the SSAT slippage may be directly tagged to the decline in FA.

rad, some of THS students may be big time recruits in some of the big time sports (basketball, football, soccer, track, etc.), but I know that some of the minor sports have just regular kids filling out rosters. In this vein, my son has been wrestling first team varsity this season (with some success, I might add…12-2 last 14 matches) and, trust me, he was no recruit, big time or otherwise. Still, Hotchkiss must be recruiting in some sports in light of the fact it won 7 NE Prep championships during school year 2008-09.
