Rush

My D is a serious, intellectual type not into drinking or wild parties; are there sororities that are specifically geared toward kids with intellectual or community service interests? If not, would she be part of the 55-60% who don't pledge, and do you think UVA would be a good fit??

im sure there are coed service fraternities - but most - if not all greek fraternities at UVa are social - philantrophy events are done simply because nationals requires them to be done.

99% of service work is done through a program called madison house. you can do any sort of service through them - and i would venture to say the majority of UVa students do something through them. I tutor at a local high school, some kids do habitat for humanity, a big/little sibling program, just about anything you can think of.

im positive that the 70/30 breakdown is a bit understated because i made of point of finding out when i was meeting with admissions representatives during my high school tour of the school (i wanted to make sure that the greek presence was still as strong at uva as when my dad went here)...the admissions officer told me that the stats were taken during first semester and would be somewhat different if taken during second semester (i may have estimated too high when i said 55-60%...sorry about that; i wasnt trying to be purposely misleading)...also, the percent of students that go greek has risen slightly each year over the past 10-15 years (im on ifc, i think those facts are probably available online though)

even if you are right, and the 30% is only including 3 of 4 years of students, are you sure that they include the freshman class in that calculation?

that being said, even if the survey includes the 1st year class with the greek system, we have 40% greek for the spring semester and 30% greek for the fall semester.

i am definetly positive that the stats are taken during the first semester including first, second, third, and fourth years... youre right though, 40-45% seems to be about the right number

you keep upping that number ahaha. i'm saying 40% at most - given the fact i don't know the circumstances of the survey. if 30% is a consistent number for the last few years (under you conditions - all 4 years counted, fall semester), then 40% would be the highest it would be at any given point - during the spring semester. Even so thats for 1 semester, as the 4th years graduate and your back to 30% come the fall.

true...that being said my first year/first semester (like most of the people i know - guys at least) was probably more consumed bygreek life (though not a specific house) because you are willing to go to most house's parties and are being invited to functions and rushed by many different fraternities instead of just one

rush is great, do it. the best 3 weeks of your semester, you get treated like a prince. a possible schedule for a day would be like:

5-6 steak at XXX house
6-7 bbq at XXX house
7-9 bar with XXX house's brothers (they'll get you whatever you want)
9-10 keg kill at XXX house
10-12 another bar with another house, and wings
then you get a call from a brother at XXX and are invited to play some beer pong, you go and come back to your dorm wasted at 3.

on weekends, you get taken to NFL and NBA games, etc.

do a lot of second years rush? i'm applying to transfer, and i would love the opporunity to rush and join a sorority, but obviously i won't be able to until fall rush or spring rush....how common is this?

yea some second years rush. not that many, but i know some second years who pledge fraternities/sororities. it's not uncommon at all for transfers.

I spoke with D (2nd year) earlier today. Rush is well underway for sororities (and doesn't it start this week or next for frats?). She said that she was told there are over 700 girls going thru the process this year, though some don't end up pledging for one reason or another. She also said she was surprised how many 2nd year girls are rushing. Some are transfers, some began rush last year but didn't commit anywhere, and some just decided to rush for the first time in their 2nd year. As untilted says-not uncommon at all.

rush for fraternities has begun on Thursday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are all open house days. you can register at each house, so dont worry about the registration issues.

But yea back to the earlier topic, you don't have to rush to love UVA. Esp Brown College people. Out of the first years, MAYBE 5 are rushing (I know of only two who are actually doing it) so... Out of 40-45 first years in Brown? Not a big percentage. I think the same would hold for languages houses and the other res colleges.
