Russia Georgia conflict...

So I'm assuming you guys are all watching the olympics, and they mention this war like every five minutes lol.

What do you guys think?
It seems like Russia has managed to take over the majority of Georgia, and is closing in on the capital (Tbilisi). This is definitely ****ing our government off, as we had "interests" in Georgia.

It'll be interesting to see how the US responds. Hopefully they won't go as far as to send troops. Why should more innocent American lives be sacrificed on this bullcrap, and plus with our troops already spread out all over Iraq and Afghanistan Bush would be crazy to fight Russia (who actually has a military).

Do you guys think this can possibly escalate into something big? Former soviet republics are ****ing the Russians off by siding with the west, so dont expect this to be the last of fighting in that area.

So yea, bring on the Cold War part deux.

Of course we're not going to fight the Russians. We're not gonna do anything more than say "We highly condemn Russia's actions."

It just really upsets me that the Russians had the nerve to do this on the opening day of the olympics.

Isn't there supposed to be a cease-fire of all wars during this time?

^^^actually I think the Georgians initiated the contact like bombing that one city for 16 hours straight on opening day.

and then Russia intervened and apparently "disproportionately" , basically rampaging through Georgia.

I wish the fighting would stop, or atleast until after the Olympics. The Gmaes are all about Peace and Acceptance, while those two countries are contradicting the purpose by their actions. I don't think the U.S. should jump in, because the last thing we need is so sort of nuclear war, esspecially beofr my Junior year. What if they blow up Dartmouth, what will be my dream school then?! Just Kidding.

It's definitely the Georgians who started the fighting.

It just makes you wonder what the hell the president of Georgia was hoping to get out of this. Did he think Georgia had a chance against the Russian Federation? Was he convinced that the west would send help? Like, this is either stupidity to the max or intentional provocation.

I saw Mikheil Saakashvili on CNN earlier this weekend. He gave off this strange vibe...It felt like he was lying about something. Then again, same with the Russians.

Haha. I saw um, some Russian guy on CNN today who accused Saakashvili of genocide / ethnic cleansing. Man, did he seem ****ed.

Call up the Georgia National Guard!!! Recall the troops from Iraq!!! Arm the Reserves!!! We shall hold Atlanta to the last man!!!

Just Kidding...

"It's definitely the Georgians who started the fighting."

No, the Georgian national government sent troops to secure a region that had been in open defiance, knowing full well that international law protected Georgia's right to defend its territorial integrity. Putin (and for all intents and purposes it's still Putin's Russia) has wanted Saakashvili (the most pro-West head of state in the region who has completely turned his country's economy around) overthrown for years, so Russia seized on this opportunity.

Russia's actions should be seen for what they are: an invasion with aggressive intent. If the Western powers have any loyalty at all to their ally, they'll intervene on Georgia's behalf.

And engage in another cold war that may not be as cold as the first one? No thanks.

Ever heard of a guy named Neville Chamberlain?

I never said appease them. The European Union should take care of this.

Not to mention, even if we wanted to, our troops are stretched too thin right now to send them to Georgia. We don't even have military capacity to intervene. Ever heard of a guy named Dubya? He's why.

You must be out of your mind.

Russia has two clear objectives:

Annexation of this region and ousting the current Georgian politicians. We can't afford to go to war on this but it's unfair and hostile for Russia to invade Georgia. Georgian troops have left Iraq and they're currently preparing to hold but they miscalculated American power.

All Georgia needs to happen is the injury or death of one of the European politicians trying to mediate a resolution to the conflict.

Russia is just trying to establish themselves as a world power and show that they are not to be messed with. I would say a good comparison to this is if a grown man takes a kids toy and the kid throws a temper tantrum and the adult responds by shooting him.
