Hey, did any of you who applied to Rutgers/UMDNJ have the phone interview with a Rutgers science professor? I am going to have a phone interview with the chemistry professor of Rutgers this Sunday and I would like some advice. I hope I do not encounter questions about chemistry or current medical science topics.

Unfortunately, my brother (who is in a combined MD program) is being a $*&% head and is not helping my cause that much.

Please help me get an idea of what to expect. Yes, I have read the other thread on interviews but I think that a phone interview with Rutgers deserves to be in this thread.

thanks guys for just viewing and not responding. I am starting to get the sense that CC is just full of a bunch of blood-sucking competitive applicants who don't care about helping others but themselves.

You guys are probably thinking, "Ha, ha, if sickofflorida does not get help then maybe his interview will go lousy...that means less competition for me! Yay!"

dude, there are only 13 views and three or more were probably you... I am still a junior so I have no idea about the interview otherwise I would be glad to help. Just relax.

I am a senior with no advice because, well, I myself am in the middle of the process and I have no clue how to go about it. Glad to be of some assistance.

i had the rutgers phone interview, last sunday.
I talked to some woman and she already had my teacher recommendations, doctor essay and transcript. She told me that she wanted to write an essay on me to send to UMDNJ, so she was trying to get information out of me that i hadn't already written in my essay. She asked me how i see myself as a doctor, what my hobbies are and other things.
The interview isn't really that formal. It takes about 30 min. Just be prepared to tell you interviewer enough things about yourself so they can write a one page essay on you.
Good Luck!

THANKS A LOT cheetah786! You came through big time. I really appreciate your advice.

If possible, could you elaborate some more on the "other things" your interviewer asked? By the way, was she a chemistry professor at Rutgers University? Last, is it true that not all those who are interviewed by phone will be able to qualify for the interview with UMDNJ?

She was a chemistry professor but she didn't ask me any science related questions, if that's what you mean by that. The "other things" were questions that elaborated what i wrote in my essay. She also asked my how many siblings i have, how i like my school, and what were my favorite classes. In the end, she gave me an overview of everything that she would write in my essay and she didn't include everything i said. I don't think they have a set list of questions that they are going to ask you. It's just like a discussion, you never know what topic you'll end up on.
I'm not really sure about your last question, but I would assume that since they are going through the trouble of writing an essay on you, they would atleast send your application to UMDNJ. Then UMDNJ decides who they will call for an interview and they don't call everyone.
I hope that helps. Don't worry about the interview too much, it's really not a big deal. I know you're nervous and looking for help, I was the same way.

Hi all,
I am in the program and was interviewed by a male chemistry professor, Dr. Schlegal. The phone interview does not matter that much as it is just simply a test to see if you are real and are not a fanatic of any sort. They should have your CV and from that they will decide whether to send you to the next round (important round) of interviews at the hospital. This first round is a mere formality; nonetheless, don't screw up by saying something offensive. Apart from that, you will be in smoothe sailing if you can give an answer that is not lewd or base. In general, know why you want to become a doctor, why you like the major you plan to pursue, what you see yourself in 10-15 years, what you do for hobbies, etc. Nothing that requires great practice or perfection. Sound normal and not pressured and you shall be fine.
Finally, if you have good SAT scores (1550 was mine, out of 1600) and okay extracurricular (I was presedent of 6 clubs, captain of my varsity tennis squad, and won Toshiba Exploravision and many other competitions (www.exploravision.org - if you want to see me in person...bottom of winners of 2005 (tall Indian kid))), then you are in great standings. They want people who they feel can do well in the MCATs, which is signalled by your SAT score. Yet, this is not to say that you will not get in if you have low SAT scores...it is just that you will have a much better chance with the higher SAT score (like everywhere else). All in all, the first interview is not as important as the second...so stay cool. Confidence is key. And if you do get in and accept, then come meet me sometime...the campus at Rutgers Newark (yes Newark is where you are forced to be) is okay...I'll treat you to lunch and show you around...but that's something of the future. Senior year is nearly ending for you guys...enjoy it...college, well college is really different.
