I am thinking about attending Rutgers for computer science and I understand that CS tends to be a very competitive major at Rutgers . I go to a very competitive high school the NYC suburbs that is nationally ranked and offers plenty of AP courses. Also, can you guys recommend other schools for me if Rutgers seems like a reach.
SAT:1470(750 Math, 720 RW)
Weighted GPA:96
AP scores:US History(4) AP Computer Science A(4)
Took many honors courses
Senior Course Load:All AP and college credit courses
Additionally, I took all the Computer Science courses my school offers if that helps at all.
I am involved in a few extracurricular activities and had a summer job for the past two years, but nothing extraordinary
Essay:8.5/10
Recommendation:My computer science teacher, who I had known for 3 years
You’ll definitely get in. I wouldn’t consider this school a stretch with your credentials. Although, I’m not entirely sure of what a 96 GPA is on a 4.0 scale
You will get in. Rutgers doesn’t accept Freshmen specific to the CS major. After you finish some required classes and have the minimum GPA you can declare CS as your major. It’s all on the CS page. A lot of kids start out in CS but most don’t end up declaring it as their major - they get weeded out with the calc and first level CS classes. You sound like you will be fine there. It’s a great program for those who stick with it.
Rutgers would be easy to get in for you. I’d suggest Stony Brook for you. Sure ranking is higher for Stony Brook but more importantly you’d save a lot on having to dorm since you live within an hour. Rutgers is a huge campus where for some classes you need to take a shuttle bus. Stony Brook is a quiet campus where everything is within walking distance.
