Hello,

So, I have narrowed it down to Rutgers and OSU. Im in-state for Rutgers and oos for OSU. However, I received two scholarships at OSU making the prices of both schools virtually the same.
Now, here is where I stand: I prefer OSU's campus and prefer its student life. OSU is ranked 17th for it's undergraduate business program and Rutgers is ranked 33rd, a small difference. However, where Rutgers truly does have its leverage is location.
As a business student, internships will play a major role in the development of my career. Since NYC is the heart of the business world, I definitely plan to come back to the east coast after I graduate. Hence, as much as I would love to attend OSU, it almost seems counterintuitive to do so. The way I see it, since Rutgers is already so close NYC, the internship opportunities and the connections that I would make at Rutgers would undoubtedly be better in comparison to those I would obtain at OSU.
But, perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps, OSU would be able to provide everything I need. To wrap things up, my real question is, is Ohio State a name that is as well-recognized in NYC as Rutgers? Or, is Rutgers better suited for my goals?

Thank you very much!

There’s no difference in prestige between Rutgers and Ohio State.
If you’re worried about internship opportunities, email or call the Career Center at OSU and ask what percentage students get internship in your major of interest, what their placement rate is, who recruits on campus, etc.

Hey, thanks for the response!

I have been in very close contact with the Career Center at OSU, actually. Acquiring an internship would not be a problem, at least within the Mid-West and with large companies. Where I fear I put myself at a disadvantage is with smaller to mid-sized companies and in regards to networking. I feel that I wouldn’t even know about at the opportunities with smaller companies. And, I feel that the professors and students at OSU wouldn’t have as many contacts on the East Coast as those at Rutgers will. Predictably, most OSU students are from Ohio and want to stay in Ohio; only about 10% of students go to the east coast after graduation and so, i fear I won’t have many connections to take advantage of.
Perhaps I am wrong, but I imagine a scenario where if I went to job fair at OSU, I would not be interested in most of the companies there. Since I would want to go back to the east coast after I graduate, I wouldn’t care for the Mid-West-based companies that I would see there. On the other hand, at a job fair at Rutgers, I would see a variety companies, all of which would be based in the East Coast.
Again maybe i’m wrong, and I hope that I am. But, the reality is, OSU simply isn’t a name I hear thrown around here on the East Coast very often. On the other hand, Rutgers is heard about all the time.

Ohio State is significantly better than Rutgers in business nationally. Naturally, because of location, Rutgers should have better ties to NY but Ohio State has more than enough connections in NY. For the same price, I would definitely recommend ohio state. I was a student in fisher and I can say that the big firms that recruit at Ohio State (JPMorgan and big 4 firms are the ones I dealt with) gave me the option of if i wanted to go back to NY or stay in ohio.

That is good to hear!
Im just playing devil’s advocate here, but I’m sure those big firms recruit at Rutgers as well. So, what advantage does OSU have that you feel give it the leg up in this situation?

First off, Ohio State will most likely offer a better college experience. Second, it depends on your specialization. If you want logistics, operations, finance, or accounting that is where Ohio State is very strong. Another thing to note is that I am from the east coast and never even slightly considered Rutgers and neither did any one I know. The kids i know from NJ say they never would have wanted to go to Rutgers. To me, I think a school similar to Ohio State with a little better NY connections is Penn State. But, Penn State won’t offer money like Ohio State which is why I chose osu over psu. If your proactive in your job search you’ll be fine at either school. It’s really more on the student than the school.

I have no doubts that I would have a better college experience at OSU. I just want to make sure that if there is a trade-off here, it isn’t a critical one. Say I wasn’t only interested in the Big 4 firms, would I be able to find internships with other, smaller companies on the east coast?
Also, out of curiosity, did most of the friends that you made in college stay in the mid-west? Is that something I should consider as well?

The difference between 17 & 33 rankings is pretty significant in business schools. If the cost is the same, pick Ohio State. You need to be proactive about your internship search either way. Target the companies you are most interested in and watch their websites for internship postings. Network with everyone you meet via internship interviews, older students who go off to companies you are interested in, etc. Ohio State isn’t on the moon… it is a one day drive from New York. There are a lot of national companies besides the Big 4 that recruit at Ohio State, so finding internships located on the east coast shouldn’t be too difficult. Small companies don’t really recruit at colleges anyway…

Again, just arguing for the sake of debate here.

But, intparent, you said I will need to be proactive either way and you are absolutely right. But, I think at OSU that would be more difficult with my goals. Since most students will not be going to the east coast upon graduation, I have a smaller pool of students to network with. I guess the real question is, how much smaller is that pool and how much does it matter?

Also, nyman123, when did you graduate from OSU?

Does anyone disagree with what the others have said?

Thanks to the B1G Conference expansion, tOSU along with institutions in the East Division will be playing at High Point Solutions Stadium starting this year which will further enhance the exposure of Ohio State’s athletics as well as academics reputation via CIC conference affiliation in the east coast - specifically, NJ/NYC area. Best of Luck & Go Bucks!! :)

In the latest 2014 Business Week’s ratings of undergraduate business programs Rutgers is ranked way below at 118 Vs. OSU at 32.

You may want to spend some time understanding the Business Week’s methodology, and whether the ranking is relevant to your needs. Don’t know much about Rutger’s career center, but OSU has a very robust career assistance center.
