Rutgers rating gets better the farther away from NJ you get.

I don't think RU is comparable to UCLA. Although Rutgers is a member of the Association of American Universities like UCLA, UNC, UVA, Michigan, UCB, and Wisconsin, these latter schools, and a few others, are the best publics. Rutgers is a step lower, especially at the undergraduate level. With an average SAT score of 1209 for enrolled students in 2004, the quality of undergraduates at Rutgers doesn't match the first level publics. There is hope with President McCormick, but with the sniping at the public schools in NJ I don't think things will change for the better.

i'm applying there....

I agree that the quality of your peer students is an important factor when comparing the qulaity of an undergraduate experience. But it is not clear to me that UCLA students are superior to RU based on their SAT scores. A quick review on the net found thAthe average overall freshman SAT was ~1140. I was surprised it was that low, but look for yourself. http://www.aim.ucla.edu/data/students/admissions/SATGPA-F04.pdf

As to the faculty, they are comparable, obviously some fields will be stronger at one or the other. Not sure how class size or student/teacher ratios compare. I would not undervalue an RU education.

I see it as 1290 for 2004 on the UCLA link you provided.

Fall 2004
Average GPA 4.12
SAT-Verbal 628
SAT-Math 662

I don't undervalue my Rutgers education. I was there in the early 60s as a history major when RU had some of the best historians in the country. When I went to graduate school at Chapel Hill in history I had no problem competing with anyone.

As an aside, I was at RU when it was a male-only school. When I mentioned this on another thread on CC someone said that it was the saddest thing they had ever heard that I was in a men's college during the sexual revolution. I made up for lost time at Carolina.

Rutgers is a fine school, clearly worth the money, but overall it has a way to go.

You mean you didn't take any classes at Douglass?

As many as I could, but the rules limited you only to courses that weren't offered at Rutgers College. So, I had two semesters of Chinese History and a philosophy course.

"How would you rate Rutgers in terms of prestige on a scale of 1-10? 10 being Harvard. My aunt in California says its is compared to UCLA out there."

your aunt might be an exception. i think most people in california have never heard of rutgers. so i highly doubt californians would compare it to two of the best UC's in the state.

"I see it as 1290 for 2004 on the UCLA link you provided."

i thought UCLA's incoming sat average for fall 2004 was 1353.

perhaps in california Rutgers isnt that well known, but when Rutgers graduate programs rank 44th in the world's top 500 universities.. i wouldnt go as far as to say that it is that unknown. Furthermore, except for boston, new jersey is within a 100 miles from some of the most prestigious schools in the country which dilutes its applicant pool. Plus, as new jersey is usually one of the top two richest states in the country, many parents are able to afford to send their children to some very expensive top notch schools. I dont think UCLA suffers too much from this problem. No matter what I do believe as many of the other posters stated, that sports is the key. There was no better feeling as a Rutgers alumni than having Rutgers beat Michigan State on national TV last year in a packed home stadium but there was no worse feeling than having them lose to New Hampshire. Lets hope this season we go Bowling!

On a side note I was wondering what everyone's take on the failed merger between Rutgers, UMDNJ, and NJIT? Do you think it might be resurrected during upcoming elections?

KFC4u, I have talked to many professionals around the country and thats not what I've heard. As a matter of fact a lot of people I talk to mistake it for a Ivy league school when really its a public ivy. That has just been my experience thou.

KFC--that's the average of accepted students. Many of the highest scoring go to Stanford and others and used UCLA as a backup.
