Hey. Just curious, but how do you guys feel about Rutgers reputation? Do you think it's well-known, a good school, crappy school, etc.? How would you compare it to other state schools like Binghamton or UMICH.?

I think it has a better reputation in other parts of the US. Whenever I tell people in the South that I was accepted to Rutgers, they are impressed. Whereas I always hear people from NJ putting the school down.

Yea, I think that's how most people feel about their state schools. It's like a last resort. I live in NY and I know that while people think of Binghamton as a good school, it's not neccesarily their dream school.

I go to HS in NJ to to my friends Rutgers is a joke. They are all applying to Ivy League schools and all get straight A's with perfect SATs and all that **. Hate to say it but i kinda agree about Rutgers. The thing is though im applying to Rutgers Pharmacy ... and no one talks ** about that place. Its one of the best pharmacy schools in the area and deff. has an awesome rep. I have to admit though... when i finally realized that Rutgers pharm. was my number 1 school my first thought was: "I wonder if they'll give me a Rutgers shirt, or an Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy shirt... cause i deff. want the second... Yeah people from NJ think Rutgers sucks...

In many if not most states west of the Delaware going to the flagship State U is just fine. Even for the top students.

Yea. I applied to Rutgers Pharmacy but got waitlisted =( Do you know if anyone ever gets in through the waitlist? So if I do go to Rutgers, it'd probably be for Rutgers College.

I gotta agree with PaRiAn...I really hope I get the Ernest Mario shirt...

Generally Rutgers has a better rep outside of NJ than in. My son and I went to an Honors Program Scholars day on Friday and came away impressed with both the program and professors. It seems Rutgers is trying to really bring its Honors program up to the level of the best state univ. programs out there.

as the people before me said, it has a better reputation outside of NJ, but that's typical for most state schools I guess.

I personally think Rutgers has a good reputation, no longer is the acceptance "breathing and living in New Jersey" :D

I think Rutgers has its strong points and its weak points, just like any other school. It definitely has the potential to be a UCLA if only some of the smart kids in NJ (and there are a lot of them; NJ's got some of the highest test scores in the nation) didn't think so poorly of it and the admission standards were raised a little.

Somagreen there is no Rutgers College anymore. Its now SAS (School of Arts and Sciences).

Anyways I think Rutgers is definitely getting a good rep out of state. I'm an outstate first year student and Rutgers, and a lot of the people I talk to who are out of NJ know and here good things about Rutgers. Honestly the instate students are the only real ones that hate on Rutgers from what I've seen. But a lot of people have high standards here in Jersey, they say Rutgers sucks but they only apply to Rutgers and Ivies, so Rutgers is there "safety" but in actuality its more of a match, but there standards are just really high.

It's a shame that it has a bad rep amongst most students here in Jersey :(

Anyway, I'm not one of those people! :)

I love Rutgers and feel happy about attending there this Fall...

...not that anyone cares...hmm...but I felt like contributing to this thread.

I'd say it definitely has a bad rep among Jersey kids, primarily because I personally know a few kids in my graduating class that slacked off a TON and still got in. But, as they say, getting in and staying in are two totally different things.

It gets a bad rep because in state kids get in pretty easily. Problem is, a lot of them think RU = HS which is obviously wrong, and they end up dropping out.

It's a great school that is on the rise.

I love Rutgers.I can't say enough about the school.I'm at SEBS,and it is pretty tough to get in and stay there. For anyone who says Rutgers is easy, has either been rejected,or feels that Rutgers is their safety school mixed in with Harvard,MIT,Columbia, and Stanford....not to shabby. For the disgruntle "IVY rejected",it is the school that they settle for.A university that just happens to be Numero Uno in the world is right down the street(Princeton). So Rutgers gets the the little brother syndrome. As someone noted..Rutgers is becoming an academic institution that may someday rival Stanfords reputation. If Rutgers can keep getting all the top NJ kids, maybe people will feel differently in a couple of years.

Rutgers has a crappy reputation in NJ, but elsewhere it's pretty good. RutgersLA is exaggerating though, Rutgers is not going to become an institution that rivals Stanford's reputation anytime soon. Rutgers is going through many financial problems because of the NJ Legislature refuses to fund education; where the money goes instead is beyond me.

Rutgers: Office of the President - Letters to the University Community - This was 2006, I don't know whats changed in the past year.

It is also going through a restructuring time, they have finally decided to condense everything and create what is essentially a "College of Arts and Sciences." Rutgers is very much in a transitional period ... as great of a deal as Rutgers is, RutgersLA is inflating his school significantly.

^I think they rose tuition because of that; I read that somewhere, just can't remember where... so sorry if I'm wrong.

with state universities, it's always easier for insate kids to get in because there is a quota (such as 2/3 instate, 1/3 out of state) that they must fill. It is the same thing as NC State in North Carolina. Kids who live in North Carolina think that the school is joke, when outside of NC it is one of the top choices for those interested in animal science and engineering.

My friend goes there and she says she absolutely loves it. It's only about 20 minutes away from main spots. She likes the campus life and everything about it.
