Rutgers University vs Sarah Lawrence - Acting/Theater

My kid M has been accepted to a SLC and Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts and a few others but those are the two he is deciding between in order to put a deposit down.

His top choice NYU he has been waitlisted.

Ultimately my kid is a working actor and his goal is deepen his work in his craft. He would like to:

1 Study theater abroad for a semester or two in London .

2 Have the option to take elective classes in music and filmmaking.

3 Connect with people and professors.

M is multitalented. Think Donald Glover. He’s. A great actor who can write music, sing, rap, and dance. Also, he recently learned how shoot video footage and edit in adobe premiere.

I say all this to say…
Looking at all of the above if between Rutgers and SLC. Which school would be the best to help M reach his true potential as an artist as well an individual.

What makes his more challenge is SLC is offering a lot more financial help than Rutgers. We are NY locals.

Any information regarding strength programs would help. Thanks in advance.

Especially if Sarah Lawerence is cheaper, I think there is no reason to consider Rutgers. Sarah Lawerence has a great acting program and its proximity to NYC means your son will have all sorts of interning and job oportunities.

Hello Abby, thank you for you’re response.

I guess one of the reasons why we were a little hesitant was because M’s drama teacher specifically told him if you’re looking to really grow as an actor SLC is not the ideal place because typically there they let the students pretty much create their own works. Or something close to that nature. I am going to do some more digging. I plan on reaching out to his drama teacher as well about that note.

Thank you again for input. Its was very helpful.

No problem, I see why that would be an issue. If you are curious about SLC’s students’ work in NYC they have an area of their website dedicated to the internships students get. I hope your son chooses a school right for his growth, whether it be Rutgers or SLC!
