S2 College Search Kick-off

This week there was an information night at my son's high school for sophomores and their parents; so I'm considering this the official kick-off for his college search. As this is our 2nd time around, I'm trying to re-group, use the knowledge I've gained on CC and the experience from S1's experience, while keeping open to S2's individual needs.

I've borrowed some guide books and casually left one in his room (kind of like the sex books from a few years ago). We've started some discussion and happily he is open to it.

S1 was relatively easy - a pretty good student, undecided math/science guy, musician, who wanted to stay in CA in an urban location.

S2 is a better student and plays sports (lacrosse, football).

Am open to any thoughts and comments from those who have 'been there/done that' Am also interested in good public schools with good academics and sports.

I have heard Lacrosse is a big help at some D3 schools. We know Football is also a help. You might want to look up the D3 Lacrosse rankings and see if any of the schools on the list appeal to your son. We did this with my D-- and we shot a little bit low, ability wise, in order to make sure she'd be an interesting recruit to the coaches we approached. We went to schools that were decent on regional rankings but not above #20 nationally.

Otherwise I might suggest you begin by narrowing down "fit" -- visiting a variety of schools, big & small, urban & rural...

One of my neighbors is a decent student and OUTSTANDING lacrosse player - will be playing for Amherst in the fall!

I'm ROFL laughing at college info books replacing sex info books.
