S21 - ACT improved so now reworking PolSci/IR/Govt list of schools

Congrats on your S’s new ACT! Re, his interests and desire for internships and travel, and love of the DC area, GT would seem perfect. It has fabulous professors and connections, and the SFS has great employment outcomes. So, if your S got into a “higher ranked” program, would that be better? Would he want to ED somewhere else, as posters are recommending?

A good friend’s D just went through the process, applied everywhere RD (bc family wanted to weigh finances though they were full pay). In the end, she turned down Duke and is happily and very involved at GT. They have a separate newspaper for SFS, which she is writing for, she already has a paid job on campus where she gets to hear all the distinguished speakers at fancy events, etc. And, she’s just a 1st year. Her family is very cost-conscious, and they said the only reason they are paying that amount is, after lots of research, they concluded she’d definitely be employable at graduation!

And, fwiw, he is Hispanic for college purposes, regardless of how he was raised. He is an URM and that rightfully should be taken into account in his admissions, though he’s fabulous regardless. But, every kid deserves to see people who look like them in high level positions. Only when all of us are equally represented will the sexism, racism, bigotry and hate in our country be overcome.

Good luck to your extremely interesting and unique son!
