Does she ever get the “spring forward” night (with one fewer hour)?
There was an incident years ago when a police officer fell asleep while driving on duty and caused a crash. The shift assignments did not properly account for the “spring forward” night in calculating the minimum required rest time between shifts, so the police officer was inadvertently assigned a shift after insufficient rest.
Yes, she has been assigned to “spring forward” nights. Those are OK because her shift is only 9 hours instead of 10. (But of course, she only gets paid for 9 hours, not 10.)
I’m in AZ and am always so happy when it switches back to standard time because it makes those 7am calls with East coast or India turn into 8am calls instead.
Much, much prefer being on MT than effectively PT during DST just for those morning work calls.
I love daylight savings time. I would never want to give up those long summer evenings. It’s finally not hot out, and you have at least four lovely hours between work and sunset. You can have a backyard bbq, go for a sail, walk the dogs, have ice cream in the park…All on a weekday.
I hate switching back and forth, and I think it’s a public health issue (more heart attacks, more car crashes when we fall back). However, I would rather switch back and forth than lose that lovely hour on summer nights.
I’m glad I only go into the office 2 days a week because traffic is always terrible at night the week after we fall back. People seem to forget how to drive in the dark.
I actually like switching. Maybe it’s more rewarding for those of us living in the far north? We just don’t have much daylight in the winter but it’s easier to get up in the morning when it isn’t still pitch black. I get confused about which is Daylight Savings and which is standard - but as it is now (switching) we have sunrise about 5 am in June and I would hate to have it get light out at 4! And I like the light until after 9 pm in summer too. It’s daylight you can really enjoy with the weather, after working hours. In winter, it’s dark out when you return from work either way, for the most part (4:30 vs. 5:30) and it’s so cold anyway you don’t really want to be outside. I hope they never change it. Unpopular opinion, I know!
My issue is extremely deep seated - when we were kids we had to be home “before the streetlights come on” - so ingrained that to this day I’m anxious if I’m not! That doesn’t happen if I’m going to an event or something, but just being out and about I feel it. Thanks for that gift mom!
