Safe Campus? Um, No.

We live in the Philly area and I worked in Philly for many years. I did not grow up here. I have traveled to many places- and unfortunately - I have to agree with the comments about surly behavior. But I don’t see it as being all that different in NY. I’m always amazed at how friendly folks are when we travel outside of this area. I think of it as a disease here in the NE. Sometimes it makes me sad to live here. I remember being impressed at the friendliness down south when we were looking at colleges. It does make a difference IMO. Why do we have to be so darn cranky around here?

Anyway, West Philly IS gritty. Society Hill and the Art Museum areas are really nice…although crime is still around. North Philly is also a rough area…near Temple. It is what it is. And yes, it is a factor when deciding on colleges…but just one of many.

JHS- I went skiing a bunch with my Phila local counsel from a past job. I have many dear friends in the Philly area (besides my family).
One business trip we walked over to the Reading Terminal Market to get some cheesesteaks for lunch. There were about 4 of us and we ordered the various steaks and sodas. The server slapped the sodas up on the counter and I asked “Could you tell me which ones are the Diet Cokes?” The guy barked at me “Just TASTE them!” So-my brand new business friends and I got to sample all the sodas! (before H1N1 days…)

See! Promoting togetherness and sharing! What could be nicer?

MOWC, you seem to hang onto your bad experiences. Your son has been there for 4 years, you lived there previously, I bet that you could give us at least one good memory from the City of Brotherly Love!

Here in Boston we were getting these Southwest Airlines ads for about 6 months promoting cheap flights to Philly. The kids and I laughed because they had this Philly taxi driver saying, “We got a lotta lotta cul-chuh heah.” Every time we hear someone refer to something cultural, we say, “We got a lotta lotta cul-chuh heah!”

Tough crowd, REAL tough. :)

fwiw: I was pleasantly surprised at the area around Penn, given all the gloom and doom I’ve read on cc.

Hey, folks can be surly sometimes but there’s a lot to love about Philly. Phillies games. Walks or runs on leafy Forbidden Drive. The Art Museum. Taking a horse and buggy through Old Town. Eating in fabulous restaurants. The Kimmel Center. Walking on the waterfront. Great concerts (I’ve seen Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Bruce and lots of good jazz)
It’s not as crazy or crowded…or full of itself as NYC. It’s a really neat city…but I still wish everyone was friendlier (those Phillies fans during playoffs are terrific though…every body high-fiving strangers in the crowd). It can be lots of fun around here.

Every time I read one of these threads in which the Southerners start insulting the Northerners and going on about how much FRIENDLIER and NICER they are than every single other person I think about Emmett Till.

collegekidsmom- You obviously don’t read my posts very often. I’m a positive person and I love a lot of things about Philadelphia, ESPECIALLY the Eagles and the Phillies, the food (I would kill for good Italian food in the south), Valley Forge, King of Prussia Mall (I plan to be buried there) and everything Ben Franklin-related. I love Franklin Field, the 60’s Eagles, the Penn bookstore, Locust Walk, 30th Street Station, the Main Line…
What does all that have to do with whether there are bad areas around Penn or that a lot of the people seem (to me) surly?

Just needed to hear it, thanks MOWC. Also, you’re correct, I don’t read your posts often but have followed them on this thread.

^^^ she “needed to hear it”? Gotta love those armchair psychologists, LOL. CC is a site to share experiences. This one happens to be one with a warning to others. Nothing wrong with that. Doesn’t seem to require a lecture.

I was out there this past weekend and had a nice long run from Valley Forge on the various bike paths. I ate a hoagie, went to WaWa and had three kinds of TastyKakes!

I’m back to my original opinion.

Don’t know what that means, but thats fine.

What would that opinion be? That because your son has a big chain lock that he’s smarter than the rest of our kids?

Yes, many times they have more insights than the degreed ones.

re #188
I really think I need a tutorial for CC.
What post are you responding to? Where on this thread did anyone claim that Southerners were in your words FRIENDLIER and NICER than any other person?

And what in the world does a horrible murder committed in the 1950s have to do with the current discussion regarding West Philadelphia?

No, it’s that you (MOWC) are just plain cranky. Now that I think of it, my guy is pretty darn smart.

^ if you think MOWC is cranky, try ordering a sandwich around Penn ;)

Glad my daughter goes to college in Kansas . . . but on second thought, they don’t have tornados in Philly. :-)
