Students crisscross campus heading to course discussion sections, study groups, libraries open until midnight and various places. Yale students and New Haven residents are often found exploring downtown well into the evening hours. Many stores are open until 9:00 PM and many restaurants are open until at least midnight.

Yale University has one of the better safety records in the Ivy League. According to reports filed with the U.S. Department of Education in 2000, the total number of crimes occurring on and around Yale's campus was below the Ivy League average. In fact, Yale University reported the second lowest number of on-campus crimes of any Ivy League school. Overall, crime in the City of New Haven is down by more than 50 percent since 1990.

THANK YOU. I get so tired of this "omg if you live in New Haven you're gonna get mugged and beaten" thing. It stems from the way New Haven was in the 1980s (pretty bad)...but the city as a whole has put in major effort to improve living conditions, and has largely succeeded.

We get campus safety reports, and the large majority of crimes reported happen away from central campus after 1 or 2 AM. Smart people know better than to walk around alone late at night.

Also want to add that the Yale administration, at least for undergrads, does the best job for its undergrads. I emailed them regarding freshmen seminars, and within 10 hours back, I got a response. So much better than the other schools I emailed to before college admissions began and during the process.
