Your dad will win because Oxford and cambridge are much easier to get into than top US colleges.

Actually I would enjoy Oxford and Cambridge. But I always thought of them as being more prestigious than HYP. Glad to hear I have a chance.

u can't apply to both oxford and cambridge, it's a rule, check the Sunday Times UK college edition book

i was considering both schools but ive had to pick one, ah wutever good luck

Berkeley has the feel of foreign soil to it. Possibly consider? Don't worry about UCSB, haha, it's over and done, and out of your memory (which is a good thing!).

TTG

Oxford and Cambridge are not easier to get into. No way. Probably harder for an American student.

Captain of 3 teams???

I think you have excellent stats; and a decent shot at all of these schools, but Dartmouth is a reach for anyone... You speak four language and are the cap. of three teams and have a perfect GPA and high class rank???

Oxford and Cambridge are NOT easier to get into than HYP. They only accept an average of THIRTY American undergraduates a year. For graduate studies, yes, it could be comparable to HYP.

To the poster: Even though you can probably get into the "top", you should go where you want to go. Prove dad wrong.

i agree with namaste

oxford and cambridge are much harder than the ivy league to gain admission to. i have family at oxford, and my cousin currently attending was nothing short of genius. he lives in england, however, so the process for americans to gain admission would be ridiculously more difficult.

Oxford/Cambridge are ridiculously hard to get into. Especially since the poster hasn't done IB. She's got a better chance in the US.

Just simply untrue. If you have top grades, you waltz right into Oxford and Cambridge, you don't also have to have invented a cure for the common cold as you do at HYPSM.

not necessarily. there's a whole procedure. interview, conditional acceptance. it's not just the grades. generally for non-englanders they expect a standardized curriculum such as IB. it's not as easy as just having good grades.

Some questions that came up while reading this thread:

If you're the youngest of 4 children, and your older brothers and sister have attended or are currently attending HYP, why would your dad be so pushy about you going to Harvard? Usually parents are very lenient on their youngest child.

Also, why would you need to take TOEFL when applying to Utrecht? You already speak English more than fluently (hence all the 800's).......

Wow, you're quite the accomplished woman aren't you Lauren??? :) i think you have a good admissions chance everywhere.

Oxford and Cambridge are safeties for anyone who even has a chance at HYPSM. And you don't need IB. Hig scores and hig grades get in every time, it's all they care about and every knowledgeble counselor knows that. They can guess almost 100% who will get in, impossible for even lower ivies!

Are you seriously referring to Oxford and Cambridge as safeties.

suze is trolling

fact of the matter is, oxford and cambridge accept about THIRTY - 30 - American undergraduates a year. they accept far more for graduate.

I'm reverting back to my original opinion about Oxford and Cambridge but I'll still give it a shot.

uhhh- I think my dad thinks of us as toys? And he just needs to like complete the set or something, honestly I don't know. So I thought...TOEFL IS a test for English proficiency. The tour guide at Utrecht told me all non-dutch speakers have the take the TOEFL and IELTS because the college I'm applying to is the honors college within the larger university where all the professors speak English. I'll call again before I start prepping.

IHATESAT- I'm not that cool...I only speak English fluently. I've only taken three years of HS Japanese and can only read Latin. I guess I can speak and write French somewhat but I'm not fluent in it. I didn't have a perfect Gpa either...I had a B in Music and Physics B (B in Physics B hehe) and a handful of B+/A- grades.

My dad is so asdfg. Today he said some stuff to me in Dutch and when I was like "huh" he was like "Maybe if you knew elementary Dutch you should go to Utrecht. You know English, so go to Harvard where people speak English". So I said "People at the community college speak English so I should go there"? Then he said he wouldn't pay the tutition for the community college. You better believe it that money is power. I can see this thing going around in circles for months...

Besides he says all this like Harvard said "Hey Lauren, come to our school because there aren't a million perfect people applying who really want to come here"! Maybe I should let it alone since theres like a 80% chance of me getting rejected, the natural way. Or maybe the whole thing isn't even about a school...it's just about having total control over the youngest daughter before she becomes an adult? Any AP-Psychers wanna take a stab? ;)

Trolling? Please, I don't go and am not applying although I thought about it. I study scattergrams, and of all the top schools, admission at those two are the most predictable. You got the numbers, you get in. That's actually the case with schools in almost every other country. Lots of Europeans at my high school and it's just a numbers game if that's where you want to be.

P.S. Trolling means saying false good things about a school!!!

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. He probably just wants the best for you and is blinded by Harvard. TOEFL- stands for "The Test of English as a Foreign Language, soo it wouldn't be logical for you you take TOEFL.
