There probably aren’t really any safety/safer schools like MIT.

think about it, if there were such, those schools would soon get a gazillion apps and quickly become harder to get into.

Also, for a school to be a safety, it also has to be affordable. Most safeties don’t give great need based aid. Some give good merit. How much will your parents pay each year? If you don’t know, you need to find this out.

thanks but I guess I didn’t really specify what I wanted.
I actually have a few safeties already. Now, I am just looking for schools similar to MIT in that sports are not a big deal, and nerdy type of people will feel at home. So far, I have CMU as a similar school.

Caltech, CMU, Case Western, UChicago, and Harvey Mudd come to mind first. Also, Reed, Carleton, WPI, RPI, Johns Hopkins, Rose-Hulman, Brandeis, Olin, Bucknell, Cooper Union, Rochester…

My daughter is interested in science – probably biochemistry. She says she wants to go into drug research. I am steering her to look at Rensellaer and Worcester Polytech, both of which have biotech facilities on campus. Anyone know about their science programs – not engineering – and career pipeline to the drug industry? Thanks.

Actually, MIT is a Division 3 sports powerhouse. But it’s also true that it’s a place where nerdy people will feel at home.

If you’re female, you might want to look at Smith. They have a great science program and lots of nerdy activities (science fiction club, quidditch team, student-run science journal, etc.). They have a neuroscience major and minor, and a joint cognitive neuroscience program with Hampshire College and Mt. Holyoke. Their sports program is pretty much on par with MIT (they’re in the same conference). For males and females, there are a number of other LACs with good neuroscience programs.
