Keep in mind that a college is unlikely to be a true safety school if it is in the Northeast, has a strong overall academic reputation, and is not a LAC.

Holy Cross, Bucknell, Colgate.

^ Those are not safety schools. They may be good match schools, but the OP does not want a LAC.

Check out Case-Western. Compared to Penn State, it has a much higher admit rate (desirable for a safety), but also much higher average SATs and a smaller Student:Faculty ratio. It has a smaller enrollment, and I think you’d find the academic atmosphere more serious. Biomedical Engineering apparently is a popular major there. stateuniversity.com rates it the #3 school in Ohio (after Oberlin and Kenyon, both LACs).

The combination of high admit rate (>70%), high SATs (75th % M+CR=1420), and low enrollment yield (~20%), suggest that CW attracts a “self selecting” pool of strong applicants. Many students who do choose to attend probably have been rejected by tip-top schools, or else are enticed by generous merit scholarships. CW awards merit scholarships to more than half of students who have no determined need; the average award is over $20K. These are unusually high numbers.

Fordham, UMCP, trinity, BU, BC - would all fall into the safety category and fit your critera

^ BC = Boston College? Its admit rate is a low 26%; 75%ile M+CR = 1430. Trinity = Trinity College (CT) or Trinity U (Texas)? Both are LACs (which the OP does not want). The others might be good safeties for a high-stats, full-pay applicant.

A match school for you would be the University of Rochester. Pitt is a good suggestion as is Case. You might consider the University of Vermont as a safety/match school. They have a good program and Burlington is a fun city, beautifully situated and Jet Blue flies there so easy to get there.

BC may not be a safety in this case. Try less prestigious schools. Northeastern, BU, NYU, Holy Cross, UConn, Fordham, Villanova, etc.

The one problem is that I am Jewish, so BC, Fordham, and Villanova would probably be out.

Brandeis may work for you then.

Maybe…this is so difficult.

regarding:"The one problem is that I am Jewish, so BC, Fordham, and Villanova would probably be out. "

Jewish students are not excluded from these Catholic schools. Aside from theology class requirements , there are no compulsory religious activities. It is up to you decide if you are comfortable in the environment.

regarding “I like the idea of Lehigh also but it isn’t really “urban””

But it is in the hood! But , seriously the OP will make need to make some compromises based on criteria cited. Northeast , urban , good athletics and school spirit , not catholic , work hard , play hard.

Sounds like University of Maryland.

With 2300 SAT, 95 UW GPA, very good EC’s including published in medical journal and independent research, along with knowing four languages and no financial need - trinity (ct), bu and bc would safeties.
Check out the Catholics like fordham and bc - I know jews that go there no problem.

Ok. Maybe Boston College. It really has everything I’m looking for in a school-except I’ve heard the people are snobby. But I guess I’ll apply there EA, so I (hopefully) have an acceptance under my belt by January.

Would I be pretty much assured admission there?

Does your school have naviance?

You’d be likely, but not assured. If you do apply EA, but you get disappointing results, you’d still have time to apply to less selective schools.

Here’s a scatterplot showing about 25 application results for BC, class of 2015:
[url=http://www.collegedata.com/cs/admissions/admissions_tracker_result.jhtml?schoolId=144&classYear=2015]Boston College Admissions Results for Class of 2015/url. Keep in mind that you have no control over the competitiveness of next year’s applicant pool.

That 1 applicant supposedly got into Harvard, Yale, Stanford and Princeton but didn’t get into BC.

^ Hmm … also WL’ed at Wellesley and JHU, and denied at Brandeis. Maybe “Tufts Syndrome” came into play. Or s/he was careless with some applications. Who knows? Results can be very fickle.

First of all, as soon as I saw your stats and criteria, I thought of Penn. I think that you have a very good chance of getting in ED as a legacy.

I would recommend GW, American, UMDCP, Pitt and BU as possible safeties that would meet most of your criteria. Good luck.

Thank you, hopefully. But I want to be safe and have safeties that I like just as much :).
