Looking for some safety schools for my junior . Basically the ones he is looking at are either high marches or reaches . Student in va . Has about 4.1 weighted gpa , 3.7 w weighted . Will have 7 Ap classes by next year and 1 ib class ( Spanish 6 ) . His sat is only a 1220 ( first time taking it … hoping to pull up to 1300) . Decent extra curricular activities and think his recommendations will be so/ so . He wants to be at a school be school spirit , possibly city or near one . strangely he likes the cold , and he wants a school where students attend sporting events ( football, hockey ,
Or basketball )… and he wants to stay on the east coast preferably north but I’ve convinced him to look at South Carolina ) So far we have on the list …Ohio state , pitt, Syracuse , Jmu , South Carolina … he wants to consider bu but I know that’s a huge reach . Also considering UVM, umass , Delaware , and maybe unh .
I would love some safety options , private or public ( preferably no religious affiliation ).
Thanks everyone !!
Quinnipiac University seems like the perfect safety school! Also, look into Towson University.
To be a safety a school has to be affordable. What’s your budget?
@“Erin’s Dad” luckily , no defined budget . Money not so much of an issue ( we are fortunate ) .
@aserto009 thanks . Good suggestions
I’m not sure I’d agree that those listed are high matches or even reaches. I’d say those are all decent matches with a couple low matches based on the very little I know from your post. If you want some safeties below that there are ton of regional State Universities like: Shippensburg, Ohio University, Bowling Green State, (the last two I added because you consider Ohio East Coast.). Also RIT is a great school that those stats are at the top of their averages. Don’t sell you junior short, I’d even add a couple reaches like RPI, Gettysburg, etc. especially if he gets his SAT up to the 1300 range. He should also try the ACT and if he is willing maybe a SAT selfstudy course or even a paid course if you can afford it. His GPA is fine and his test scores could improve with a little coaching I think.
@BrianBoiler for the encouraging info . I just feel like so much of what I’ve read makes his stats seem on the low end . I’d love to know I’m wrong . I know he wants a mid size school to bigger school . He wants to go into law enforcement , probably fbi and is thinking of majoring in psychology . He is currently taking a criminal justice class and took a week long program during last summer with iue local sheriffs office . He is member of nhs, beta and key club . He’s had great leadership experience being a part of the 4h program for the past 7
Summers . He’s a senior counselor now . He also had other volunteer hours and has played soccer and ran track .
I agree If he can pull up sat score , that would open up more options . He good act and did not do well . I think the rushed time really hurt him. He could try again but I think sat is better for him .
Thanks for suggestions( I will have him look at them ), and if you have any others based on additional info , I would love it . Thanks again!
What does he expect to major in?
@“Erin’s Dad” he’s thinking psychology . He wants to go into law enforcement and hopefully join the fbi . Thinks psych would be a good major . Hear fbi does not necessarily want criminal justice majors .
University of Dayton- supposedly everyone loves it! Miami of Ohio? Another one where the kids are happy to be there. Elon??
@naviance Thanks for recommendations !
Just an FYI. Based on a VERY recent conversation with an admissions officer at JMU with the principal of my son’s school, they are acutely aware of being used more and more as a safety, particularly as an in-stater. From the 7 in-state VA colleges she spoke to, that was the one that she rec’d the strongest yield protection vibe from. (a STRONG vibe at that)
Take that for what you will.
Indeed the FBI doesn’t want Criminal Justice majors (vocational major mostly for future police officers or doc officers.)
Ability with data or languages can be handy.
U Vermont, Ithaca, UNH, UDel, SUNY Plattsburgh would all be matches to safeties.
I had 3 college friends end up in the FBI. I think one business major and 2 actuaries. They need guys good with numbers to decipher some of the fraud cases.
Check out WVU. They have some kind of collaborative effort with the FBI and some specialized programming
@Catmatmc I’m not surprised . Luckily or unluckily , Jmu would not be a safety for my son .
@Proudmama2 I’ve heard that about wvu. Trying to get my son interested . Thanks .
@MYOS1634 good recommendations : thanks . Looking to see about the sports teams at these schools . I know he wants to have some of that school spirit you get from sports . Thanks again !
You could see if he’d be interested in these (of high interest for the FBI)

@MYOS1634 great recommendations . Unfortunately , he does not want to do cyber security ( he wants to be doing field work ), but the program at Mason sounds interesting . Did. It know they had that major . Thank you !
