I am very interested in studying a PhD program in Engish or English education or Linguistics.
My stats:
undergraduate GPA: 3.2
graduate GPA (master’s degree): (Australian score: 4.4 on the scale of 7, which I convert to about 2.3 in American grade point system)
GRE: Verbal: 470, Math: 650, Analytical writing: 4.0
IELTS: 7.5
Some awards at work for small scale research
Very good letters of recommendation.
attend a lot of short courses in TESOL and presenters at some provincial TESOL workshops.
Can you please suggest some US universities which offer me the most likely opportunities to be admitted?
I have searched a lot of universities, which I think may suit me but I am not confident and certain because I find that my stat is not good enough.
Utah State University, Ball State University, University of Utah, University of Arkansas
Thanks for your hep!!!
I would definitely find some safeties in addition to those schools. I would recommend talking to a guidance counselor at your school, or using the super college search on the college board website.
Just from a search of schools in the western part of the country in your sat/gpa range, I got
Holy Cross College
Notre Dame, IN
Huston-Tillotson University
Austin, TX
Indiana University Northwest
Gary, IN
Nevada State College
Henderson, NV
Purdue University North Central
Westville, IN

Admission to a humanities doctoral program is very difficult. Almost nobody gets in and gets funded. You need a verbal GRE score at least 300 points higher, the means to pay for the program, and the understanding that academic jobs in this country will be extraordinarily competitive. Look at Chronicle of Higher Education and read about the experiences successful students are having.
