I ask because Detroit is, arguably, the most dangerous city. Although they're 2 different cities, they're pretty close together.

This is really my mother's concern, not mine. I'm just trying to find answers for her. I'm not really looking for a specific answer. If you have anything to say, please feel free to say it.

It is not nearly as bad as Detroit…as far as extremely safe, that might be a stretch. I would not call crime a big problem, but there are amounts of larceny, burglary, and even armed robbery that go on near campus…better than your average city, but not as great as the suburban communities that most students are used to. Take precautions (lock doors, don’t walk around the student ghetto alone late at night, etc.) and you’ll be fine.

Crime is definitely higher in student areas because criminals know that students are easy targets. Students don’t lock doors, have expensive stuff like laptops and iPods, etc.

I hadn’t even considered this in my previous post, but since crime in Ann Arbor is centered in the campus area, things aren’t nearly as rosy as they seem in the statistics pointed to above.

I don’t want to make things sound terrible here though. Again, if you always lock your doors and don’t run around alone late at night, you shouldn’t have any problems.

And the “student ghetto” isn’t really a ghetto…just the crappy housing south of campus where students typically live. This would be where most of the crime occurs on campus though. (Not really violent crime…more just larceny/burglary. Robberies do happen though.)

you should feel safe here. Whenever there is a crime on/near campus. the DPS sends out an email to all the students letting them know what happened. I think this past year, I got around maybe five of said emails.

Ann Arbor is a VERY safe place. There are a lot of thefts but there are going to be a lot of thefts in all college campuses. Do not compare Ann Arbor to Detroit when it comes to safety. There are only very few rare cases of danger throughout the years. Like the Sunday Morning Slasher. [Coral Eugene Watts - The Sunday Morning Slasher Coral Eugene Watts](Serial Killers and Mass Murderers)
Not to get you scared or anything…

Do not associate Ann Arbor with Detroit/Flint/anywhere dangerous. Honestly its probably one of the safest places to live/grow up, much less go to college

Exaclty correct pistons08. I can’t imagine walking ANYWHERE in Ann Arbor during the day where I would be concerned about my safety. At night, as in any larger city, you have to be aware of your surroundings.

If you’re going to live in a college town, always use common sense, especially if you’re outside alone at night. The burglars come out looking for easy targets (people who don’t lock doors, people who are walking around drunk, people who leave stuff out in the open, etc.)

Ann Arbor is so incredibly safe, its not even funny. I have never once in my 3+ years here felt the least bit concerned for my safety. During the school year, I regularly walk home from the library or friends’ houses in the early morning hours (3, 4, 5 AM) with an expensive laptop, northface coat on and cash in my pocket. If I did this back home, I would be robbed in less than 5 minutes.
