Safety Suggestions

So, here goes nothing, I go to an above average school in NJ (1-2 kids go to ivies each year). I am going to be a senior next year. My GPA is around 3.64 (looked it up yesterday) UW/3.85 W. My SAT score is a 1970 (M: 700 CR: 630 W: 640 - 10 essay).

What can your family afford?

Since safeties often give lousy need-based aid, we need to know how much your family pay. IF you don’t know, ask them.

Also…

What kind of school do you like?

Is your M+CR SAT 1330 from one sitting?

I don’t need any FA

What size college/university do you want? What sort of location (urban, rural, town, et al)? Do you have any other interests or passions? Do you care about sports, music, political atmosphere? Your credentials are good, but unspectacular: if Poli. Sci. is interest, you should consider the DC colleges (G’town stretch, GW & AU matches, with AU closer to a safe). Rutgers CAS is probably pretty safe for you as a Jersey resident. Temple, Pitt, NYU, Fordham are all matches, if you want a big, urban school. If FA isn’t a concern, then look at lots of smaller schools. Do you want to stay in northeast? If not, consider Tulane or Occidental.

If you could answer the questions in Stagemum’s post, we’ll know more about the type of school you might like. :)

Good to know that your parents will pay for wherever you go. :)

The area isn’t a big concern to me. But I would like a school that isn’t in the middle of nowhere. Sports/clubs aren’t a big deal to me.

What are your reach and match schools? Seeing what you have in mind would help us think of safeties for you.

My favorite safety school for a good student like you is DePaul. It is in a fun neighborhood of Chicago and a very pleasant school. Many strong academic departments and a nice atmosphere on campus. Some merit aid too, which is nice.

Are Catholic schools ok? There are many of those…St. Louis, DePaul, Loyola Maryland, etc.

And, then there’s the flagships that typically offer good poly sci programs…especially if the campus has a good law school.

These would all be safeties…and a couple would give you a good-sized merit scholarship (I know that you say that you don’t need aid, but it’s nice to get merit scholarships from safety schools. )
