Safety?

Hey new students at the UofC, do you feel safe on campus and in its surroundings? If not, why dont you? Thanks

I ask this because the issue of safety is what kept me from attending the school. The school I attend now does not compare to the academics I am looking for which I can find at UofC and need to know if this concern should be dismissed. Thanks

I feel very safe here, and I walk back to the dorms from the library late at night. Then again, I have lived in Chicago for most of my life, so I have grown up with this.

Just like when living in most every large city in the United States, it is best to keep your eyes open, look in all four directions, and walk with a buddy late at night. Sure, incidents in Hyde Park happen, so one has to make sure one is aware of one's surroundings. That said, I feel perfectly fine walking around during the day, and I feel fine late at night as well. I never think of safety as an issue.

I have lived in Chicago most of my life as well and it comes down to this. If you don't mess with anyone, they won't mess with you. Just do't try to look tough and try to antagonize anyway. If you come from a really rural "white" neighborhood, you will have to adjust quickly but safety isn't an issue if you do what I say.

I feel safe here, but that's also because I don't go off wandering by myself at night. (that's not advisable on any college campus anywhere.) The neighborhood is not crime-ridden, but it's sad, and as long as you're in a big group or you're in a busy area in the daytime you should be fine.

There are blue emergency phones all around, off campus and on, and a shuttle bus takes people from the library to the dorms and such, making late-night wanderings unnecessary.

I feel COMPLETELY safe on campus and in the immediately surrounding areas. I've walked a few blocks off campus with friends at night and felt safe. Also, after midnight, I think, there is a van service that will pick you up anywhere in hyde park and bring you back to your room.
