On campus = Safe?

Okay, I'm sure this has been asked a million times, and I know we all know that outside of campus is not as safe as the university would like it to be. However, im wondering: is the campus itself safe? In other words, can i walk around campus at any time of the night without getting mugged....?

It's stupid to wonder around by yourself at night. Then again, when would you need to? If you run into that situation, there are vans or shuttles that you can take around campus. It's never a good idea to walk around alone at night, whether you go to the U of C, Columbia, or Cornell.

There aren't strict campus lines, either. Some dorms and campus buildings are far from the main quads, so they're not really on campus. It would be difficult to clearly say what is and isn't "campus." All of it is pretty safe, though, if you use common sense.

It's pretty safe. You want to use common sense, obviously - not too far off campus alone at night, not walking around too drunk, etc. - but for the most part it's a really safe campus. The private police force is everpresent and they thoroughly school you on how to stay safe during O-week. I've been out and about at all hours of the night with hardly a care.

There's no guarantee that some crackhead won't take your money, either, but that can (and does) happen anywhere in Chicago and pretty much anywhere you have a large city. And the city's prohibitive gun laws don't stop all gun crime, but they do lessen it.

You do have to watch out for the econ majors during finals week, however, especially if you were originally in the class but dropped it "because it looked like an unreasonable amount of work." Don't remind them of this while they're stressed out from studying.

Jack makes a valid point. Econ majors are dangerous, and I speak as someone who just finished the sequence an hour ago...watch out for us during finals week. This also holds true of premed people who are suffering through honors ochem as well.

I am majoring in econ, so consider me dangerous!! lol jk
