So yeah, I wrote down I was from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea instead of Republic of Korea(why would north korea call themselves democratic???). But in my green card, it says Im from south korea. Should i email the colleges I’ve sent an application to, or is it a harmless mistake and they will oversee it?
I strongly suggest that you email the colleges that you applied to. They probably won’t have any qualms in changing the country and it’ll ensure that your entire application is accurate
Email the colleges. This is not a small mistake in terms of admissions eligibility.
Probably for the same reason that the German Democratic Republic and Democratic Kampuchea had “Democratic” in their names.
Haha! But really, this error is actually very common. I can’t tell you how many ROK kids I’ve known who have been suckered in by the word “Democratic” and mistakenly put DPRK on their Common Apps.
States like NK and the former “people’s democratics” in Central Europe consider(ed) themselves “democratic” not so much because of the observance of liberal norms like free elections etc. (which they consider[ed] to be empty forms) but because they embodied a program of anti-feudalism, anti-fascism and anti-imperialism. In other words, they were democratic by virtue of being anti-anti-democratic. If that makes sense, which it might still not.
I’ve made same mistake this year…
Listen to the above posters. Email ASAP!
Sure, email, but don’t panic. I am guessing the number of kids who, have actually applied from North Korea is close to zero. They have seen this mistake before.
