SALEM COLLEGE

New this year is President Sterritt, formerly of Stanford and more recently Harvard.
Winston Salem, now formally referred to as City of the Arts, is a wonderful small city moving up.
Salem is ideally located on the edge of downtown with more than fifty restaurants and bars within a one mile radius.
Art galleries, theaters, hotels, spas, salons, banks and boutique shops also nearby. University of North Carolina College of the Arts is a few blocks away and top university Wake Forest is across town about four miles away.
Salem is an extraordinary college. Founded in 1772 as a girls school by Moravian settlers who walked to Salem from Pennsylvania, it is the oldest all women's colleges in the United States (even older than Mt. Holyoke). They do have co-ed graduate programs in the evenings with an enrollment of about 300.
Noted courses of study include Art, psychology, music and English.
Brand new student center opened in May, 2014.
With just 750 (+/-) undergraduates, class size is usually 15 or less. Largest lecture hall seats about 50.
Absolutely charming campus with extraordinary landscaping. Residence halls are scattered throughout with a few right on Church Street next to the administrative buildings.
4+1+4 semester arrangement with one course in January.
Leadership program and a great sense that the administration is most interested in the true development of all aspects of the maturing woman student. This is a caring, warm, cooperative environment with a strict honor code.
One of the best small colleges in the United States. Also good financial aid and a great, proud alumni.
My daughter is a freshman and already feels at home.

Salem is such a beautiful campus, and Winston-Salem is indeed artsy and has good restaurants – you’ll enjoy visiting. So glad your D is off to a good start!
