They went from 1676 admits to 1400 last year despite a major increase in applications (20% admit rate for EA for 2015, down from 29% the year before). Just curious to see what they did this year. If they admit 1400 again, it is down to 16% like the article says but it could be even lower.

The 1,676 year was a complete anomaly. For years, ever since expanding its class to 1,350, Chicago admitted about 1,400 people EA. One year (class of 2014), it admitted close to 1,700. But of course that meant a concomitant reduction in the number of people it could admit RD.

^ Note, also, U Chicago experienced record enrollment in the Class of 2015–it was enough of a surprise that they had to scramble to house them all. I think they’re doing a bang up job dispelling the myth fun is dead! I also believe the (controversial) marketing campaign has been successful in educating more applicants, families and counselors about U Chicago (texaspg, you probably run in more sophisticated circles than I do, but I’ve encountered plenty of fellow Texans who equate University of Chicago with University of Houston or University of Dallas–I’m not disparaging those institutions at all, but they share little in common with U Chicago beyond their mutual choice of city locale as name). Of course, I also acknowledge the number of matriculants who regard U Chi as their “Plan B” school increases apace with the boom in elite applications.

Anyway, whether last year’s pop in yield was an anomaly or start of a trend, it may account for some tweaking of the admission process here and there…

Chicago seems to have admitted a tad more than 1500 students. About 1/6 of EA application pool and more than the expected enrollment. You can expect about 2000 additional admissions in RD round and 100 waitlisted enrolled students.

xiggi - do you see an announcement somewhere?

No announcement, but our friend Jacques must have his sources. I see no reason to doubt that the 1,532 number is what Chicago allowed to seep out. The percentage at just below 18 percent places Chicago in the same category as the other EA juggernaut (G-town with 15 percent.)

Now, you only have to sit on pins and needles awaiting the release of the total number of applications in January. :)

An online feature for admitted students puts the number at 1,557 (18%) with 95% from US and Canada.
