SAMS at Carnegie Mellon 2019-2020 Discussion

I think I submitted at midnight 2/16 but still no response :frowning: Thereā€™s also the email they send about COVID affecting decision times and the existence of the Pre-College as a whole reee

@EntrophyChidi did you get your decision through email or on the portal? i submitted 1-2 days after you but I havenā€™t gotten anything :frowning:

welp, we all saw this coming. but it still sucks. say goodbye to sams 2020

I just wanted to say congratulations to the students accepted in to SAMS 2020 (son is a SAMS 2019 alum).

My son showed me the list of colleges that members of the 2019 cohort will be attending (so far about 1/4 of his cohort have put in their college destination) and it is shocking how successful they have been in getting into amazing top flight colleges and universities (Almost all of the schools listed so far are either top 20 USNWR Research Universities or top 20 USNWR LACs throughout the US).

Carnegie Mellon SAMS Program may be the start of many successful admissions decisions for the SAMS class of 2020.

i never even found out my decisionā€¦ ig thatā€™s a good thing? idkkk

will they still be reading applications if they switch to a virtual program ? or are the rest of the applicants just never getting their decision ?

They officially canceled the entire program, including any online options, so Iā€™m betting they wonā€™t be looking at any applications any more.

Dang. As an alum from three years ago, real sorry you guys didnā€™t get to experience the program. I agree, having it online would not have been the best thing because the in-person experience is so much better. Hopefully, to any sophomores who applied, you can reapply as juniors!

I learn a lot about SAMS by reading through your guysā€™ posts. Thank you all for sharing information here.
Now itā€™s time to talk about SAMS for 2021 summer. Can anyone help answer the following questions?

  1. is there less chance of getting in for sophomore applicants?
  2. If rejected for 2021 and reapply for 2022, will the 2021 rejections act as a negative factor in 2022 application when they review the application?
  3. Anyone has experience about the Computer science scholars program at Carnegie Mellon? Is it harder or easier to get in than sams? How about the program? Is it as good as sams?
  4. when usually sams application starts? Now it seems there is no link for online application for 2021 yet.

Thank you!

Hey @lc2020. My son was a member of the last SAMS class (2019) that was on campus at Carnegie Mellon and things may have changed a lot since his cohort attended SAMS, but I can tell you what happened for his SAMS cohort.

In 2019, there were only 20 rising juniors who were selected for SAMS, but I am not sure how many students who applied as sophomores (I do know that most of the applicants applied to SAMS as juniors)

I heard this question asked by an accepted student whose rising junior sibling was not accepted and they responded that the students are evaluated each year against the applicants for that particular cohort.

I am not familiar with this program.

The application opened in November of 2018 for the 2019 cohort so I would assume that the application period will open soon. Looking at the current Carnegie Mellon SAMS website, they have already announced that the 2021 cohort will have 5 weeks of online learning and an one week in-person conference followed by an ā€œEngagement Experienceā€ from August to December of 2021. So the program is very different from the experiences of most previous cohorts. Good luck to you in your application process.

Thank you so much for the detailed response! Very helpful!

I am browsing through all CMU-Pre-college programs. Are all the CMU programs (AI4All, Computer Science Scholars, SAMS) are targeted only for underrepresented communities ?
Do they consider Applications from other communities for above pre-college programs particularly SAMS?
