I have been accepted into both schools for Business administration. What school is better for giving me a good education and job/internship when I graduate ? I would also like to get my M.B.A or J.D. after 1 or 2 years of gathering work hours for a graduate program. I like Cal Poly because of its location, but the thing I don’t like is how rural it is. On the other hand there is San Jose State which is in a urban city but I’ve heard is a big commuter school. I would like to know what school you would choose & why (pros vs cons). I’m really stuck between the two school, also San Jose state is a bit closer to my home but Cal Poly is harder to get into.
I really want to have a memorable college experience where I can do a lot of stuff and have fun.
Both good options but Cal Poly Slo is the better regarded program and students seem to do well with internships in Silicon Valley (and beyond). Both offer totally different college experiences - one urban and one in a pretty nice college town. My vote would be for Slo for strength of the program as well as college experience.
Many CSUs, including SJSU, are located in urban areas. This means that lots of people live within commuting distance of the school. And if that’s the case, then naturally a large part of the student body will minimize their educational costs by living at home. So urban CSUs typically have a “commuter school” atmosphere – there may not be much campus activity in the evenings or on weekends, because so many of the students leave and go home.
Other CSUs, including Cal Poly SLO, are located in relatively rural areas, far from the major cities. You apparently dislike rural locations. But when a school is located far from any major cities, it’s hard to commute. So virtually all Cal Poly students move to SLO, and live on or near the campus. Cal Poly has a much livelier “residential school” atmosphere, because the students don’t leave in the evenings or on weekends. They don’t go home, because it’s too far.
If you want a CSU with a “memorable college experience”, then your best bet is probably a more rural campus (like Cal Poly SLO or Chico State) where commuting is impractical. If you want a CSU in a more urban location (like SJSU or Sacramento State), then the trade-off is that there will be more commuters and less campus life.
