Santa Monica College in California

Hi,
I'm a freshman in Stetson University. - major in Business Ad.
My first semester GPA seems like around 3.5 -3.6
I want to transfer to decent schools like top 25.

Does anyone recommend me to transfer to Santa Monica College in California first then transfer to USC/UCB/ or those top schools?

I heard it's top transfer rated community college.

I do feel kinda embarrassed (sorry for my parents) to attend community college... but I think it's worth if i could get in to those colleges.

I'm planning to finish freshman year in Stetson.
Can I transfer my credit to community college? and can I also transfer in a year? -> as Junior level.

How hard to maintain GPA in Community college?

Does anyone recommend any path to reach my goal?

thanks.

Im in the same boat with you and trying to see if transferring down is better,
Some people have told me yes.

I don’t think you should be embarrassed, id see it as you’re working around the system :P

Yes you can transfer all your credits to SMC. You should be able to transfer within a year and it does hurt to ask an advisor youre comfortable with and trust.

GPA at a CC is stupidly easy depending on the subject matter and the professor so it really depends who you get.
SMC is known to be a high transfer CC BECAUSE it’s academics aren’t mediocre

I hope you find your answer soon!

And always remember that college is your decision, your parents have already succeeded in getting you through HS with an ambitious mind. :)

This seems like a very strange plan to me if you will already have a year at a 4 yr college. Better to ace your classes and try for a Jr transfer somewhere. For top 25 college you’d better have very good gpa and be a community leader or have something special going for you.

The UC system gives transfer priority to California residents. Not sure about USC. Most transfers to USC come from CCCs but I don’t know if they have the same resident preference.

I currently go to SMC and here is what I think:

If you are looking at the UC schools, SMC is a great place to be. There are a lot of transfer agreements that make it easier for CCC students to transfer into them. Also, if you do decide to go to SMC make sure to apply for the “Scholars Program”. Not only does this program give you access to great counselors, but it also gives you priority class enrollment and even more priority for UC school admissions.

SMC is also a great place to be if you are trying to transfer to USC.

No matter what though, you will need the grades. So if you do decide to do this… make sure to stay focused and ace your classes. Some of them can be quite hard, and others can be very easy. (check ratemyprofessor.com and “smc grade distribution” when choosing your teachers).

Good luck
