While browsing through some old UC transfer forums on CC people were discussing how SMC had a winter 6 week session that was equivalent in the credits for a full semester.
I’m a bit confused at how this is done (is it a really intense cram session?) I’m also interested in if a person can take an online 6 week course and how time consuming would they be. I’d be taking GE course that I need that aren’t the main math and english ones.
I’ve taken a couple. Depending on what you take, there are a significant amount of work. However, I stayed on top of deadlines and didn’t find it that difficult.
Just be aware that the classes end in February and the grade would not be included in the January update.

Are the classes the equivalent to regular semester classes?
What classes would you say were among the “lighter” courses. Also are any of these fully online?
Yes, it is considered the same if you take Philos 1 during the fall or Philos 1 during the winter. It doesn’t even say it was an online class on the transcript!
I really liked the art history and philosophy classes I took, however the work load was pretty solid. I’d avoid biology.
Check out ‘online classes’ in the yellow column on the left http://www2.smc.edu/schedules/2015/winter/
6-week courses are intense. Never doing that again. In my opinion, you should only do it if you have to.
6 weeks courses are pretty tough! But definitely manageable if you really read the books everyday. I believe I took 3 courses in a winter intercession and each class had us covering about 3-4 chapters of the text per week, so it was basically the equivalent of the actual 16 week course - just at a really fast pace. I took sociology, child development, and I think it was either a health or philosophy course. The sociology class almost beat me. Assignments were due just about every weekday and the class was only out of 100 points, so missing even one was serious stuff.
Definitely only take winter courses if you really need to knock some classes out. I believe you’ve mentioned that you wanted to be a 1 year transfer - this would be a good reason to try the winter session.
@zettasyntax
I’ll make sure to check it out. I wanted to apply as a one year transfer to USC and some other privates.
