SAT and ACT overlap?

How much overlap is their in the SAT and the ACT? It has been so long ago since I've taken the ACT that I can't really compare the two.
ACT seems like easier questions, but you have to work faster/it is harder to finish.
SAT was a little harder, but you had more time (at least for me).

But I'm talking more content wise, will studying a lot for CR help my Reading ACT subscore? I'm pretty sure ACT math is like SAT math, just a little less tricks. I just have to work on speed.

I'm wondering if I should not have devoted so much time to SAT and of my original scores in both tests, my ACT was a little higher(no prep). My only problem was running out of time.

What about your personal experiences?

thanks

CR will most definitely help for ACT Reading which tests the same skills minus vocab.

I studied SAT CR massively because i felt that it was my weakness. Like I was getting mid 600 scores. I ended up getting a CR 750 on the SAT & a 36 on reading for the ACT.

The best SAT CR technique is to decide why answers are wrong; don’t try to justify that they are right because 90% of the answers are straight out of text even if they say “infer… blah blah”. Also, force yourself to enjoy + passionately love the passages you read. Helps you stay conscious as you read them.

Thanks

I’m trying the “decide why answers are wrong” method, it seems like a lot of people and books say to do that. I checked out Rocket Review again from the library and I’ll be going over that and I just need to practice more. I have 9 BB tests left and 7 PR tests.

Thanks again.

Preparing for one test will help with the other, just not very efficiently.

Math: I wouldn’t say the SAT Math section has more tricks; it just requires more thinking. The ACT is mere application of concepts and formulae. I did feel more time-crunched on the ACT, but the problems were easier though slightly higher-level.

Reading/CR: Preparing for the SAT CR will make the ACT Reading feel very easy. The SAT requires greater synthesis of information and, indeed, critical interpretation, whereas the ACT comprises almost all straight-from-the-passage questions.

Writing/English: There is less overlap in these sections than I expected. The ACT focuses more on punctuation and subjective writing decisions than the SAT does.

Science: SAT preparation won’t help at all.

(This comes from the perspective of a 2400er/36er.)

Here’s my outlook on the comparison. I have taken the SAT 3 times and ACT 2 times.

ACT Math tests many more concepts than SAT Math, including Trig and ellipses. So SAT Math studying wont cover nearly all the topics. Still, ACT Math is much more straightforward. (I got a 36 and an 800 so I’m not biased)

Reading is easier on the ACT than on the SAT. And it is all reading comprehension, so there is no vocabulary.

English is much different on the ACT than SAT Writing. Instead of just grammar, ACT tests rhetoric, or the function of phrases/words rather than only the structure of phrases/words. I would say ACT English and SAT English are equal in terms of difficulty, but it really depends on whether you’re a good writer. The essay doesn’t count towards your composite on the ACT, but it does on the SAT.

Science, in my opinion, can be studied for, but SAT studying won’t do anything. Practicing is probably the best way to study for this so you reallize the time limit, but also taking many different science courses will slowly develop your knowledge.

So practice English and Science, and study Math, and you should be fine for the ACT after SATs are over.

^ I agree with your assessment.

Thanks.

So you think that SAT Writing and ACT English are about the same difficulty wise? That is kind of strange, to me at least, because I got a 31 on the ACT English and a 580/8 essay and 610/8 essay respectably last two times I took the SAT on writing.

The 25 I got on science really dragged me down, so I definitely need to study that. My math score was decent (high 20s), but I didn’t come close to finishing so just some simulated practice will help that.

I think my goal of 32 is in reach with 33+ Math, English, and 34+ Reading and 30+ Science.

Trying to crack 700 in each section for the SAT. Math is coming down fine, just need to cut down on stupid mistakes and master a few more concepts. CR is going to need more practice and I need to learn basic grammar and write more on the essay (I can only get 1.5 pages) to do a little better on writing.

Thanks guys
