I'm studying for the Oct 5th SAT and the Nov ACT and was wondering how much do these very different tests overlap so I can attempt to curtail my studying to a particular area of weakness.

Everything about the ACT is vastly different except for the reading section, studying for the SAT definitely helped me on focusing on the passages. Math, science and english on the ACT are very close to the content you learn in school…(formulas…perimeter…graphs…tables…etc…)

Since I’m using Dr. Chung’s Math Book, The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar, and DH Vol 1 and 2, will those books help me at all? I also have Gruber’s Math book, but I haven’t used it a lot.

There’s a fair amount of overlap…main differences are the science section, lack of vocabulary, and slightly more advanced math.

Would the books that I’ve listed above help me at all? What other books/resources can I use?

^^^In terms for studying for the ACT.

does anybody know if colleges strictly view act and sat as independent of each other? like if i sent a 31 composite score would colleges view it as an equivalent to a 2040 on the sat or a much more substantial act score?

This pretty much answers your question: [ACT vs. SAT](ACT vs. SAT - The ACT for Bad Test Takers)

I would suggest picking one (preferably the ACT) and focusing solely on it. Diverting your attention will end up making both scores suffer.
