I rather stumped on Question 14 on page 765 that asked for a word that is closely related with "naturally."

After reading Collegeboard's explanation, I am still perplexed why the answer is not E. It seems that both answers D and E are correct to me. Help please?

In 1779, Abigail Adams urged her husband, in a letter, to “remember the ladies” in his work on the legal code for the new republic, reminding him that wives needed protection against the “naturally tyrannical” tendencies of their husbands.

Remember that context can be found in the sentence after the question, too. I would venture that there might be a clue in the following sentence.

However, if Abigail needed to remind him that husbands were tyrannical, then it isn’t that they are ‘unsurprising’. Unsurprising are rather obvious. Abigail is reminding her husband of this tyrannical tendency because it is that they are so imbedded within the other husbands’ personality that it is might be overlooked because it occurs so naturally…

You need to find a word that means ‘coming from within’ or ‘imbedded’ and in this case, innately works best.

I mean I understand why innately is correct but I’m still confused as to why ‘unsurprisingly’ is wrong… I’ve been thinking for literally 3 hours and I am still very stuck…

Unsurprising might work in the sentence, but it changes its meaning. Saying that husbands are innately or naturally tyrannical is different than saying that they are unsurprisingly tyrannical. Saying that they are unsurprisingly tyrannical does not convey the reason for their tendencies (it is innate) but the word naturally does.

I agree that innately is the correct answer but how is ‘unsurprisingly’ also wrong? The men’s tendencies are unsurprisingly because it is how they treat the women, therefore they continue to act like that…? I’m just super confused on that one single question.

I’m just having trouble figuring out the difference between unsurprisingly tyrannical vs naturally tyrannical.

Men being unsurprisingly tyrannical does not show that they born this way (which is meant by innate or natural); rather it just means that it is to be expected. For example, it might be unsurprising because men are in a position of power over their wives and people will exploit their power. This does not indicate that the tyrannical tendencies are natural, but that they develop over time.
