Hi,

I was wondering if I would benefit from taking the SAT Chinese Subject Test, which is in mandarin, while I speak Cantonese. Would colleges know this?

Thanks

Hi hitek,

Colleges would not know that you are Cantonese unless you specifically informed them. While it certainly wouldn't harm you to take the test, colleges unfortunately wouldn't fully appreciate the difficulty level of a Mandarin test for a Cantonese speaker.

Do you have a Chinese-sounding name (first or last)? Do your parents? If there's any hint at all that you may be Chinese, don't take the test. The adcoms won't care that you had to learn Mandarin and are a native speaker of Cantonese (which for those of you who may not know, are really different from each other).
