@ivysource, where did you get those ACT composite percentiles? I’ve never seen them published as anything but whole numbers before.
@candjsdad Happy to help! Those are just the averages of different SAT / ACT percentiles that I have seen over the years, collected from official ACT and official SATs (before the score inflation kicked in). The percentiles are mostly consistent but they do vary somewhat from year to year.
I figured why not give as much detail as humanly possible…
May SAT subject scores are online.
@Mamelot Yes, May scores are out! I’m disappointed that I did worse than expected (770R / 750M), but I don’t mean to humblebrag…it’s obviously still a solid score. Still, a 1520 on the New SAT only converts to a 1490 on the old 1600-point scale, which is only 10 points better than my score from 1997, half a lifetime ago.
I’ve scored a perfect 2400 in the past, and I tutor/teach the SAT for a living, so perfection is always my goal. I’m only human, though, so I’m still prone to careless mistakes from time to time, especially if our 5 and 6 year-old girls are not letting me get enough sleep before the test! As the saying goes, I try to “seek perfection but settle for excellence,” and I urge my students to do the same.
Either I made some careless mistakes (likely), or I was the victim of a vast College Board conspiracy to keep me from acing my first new SAT (unlikely). I’ll know for sure when I receive a copy of the actual test and can double-check my answers.
2 wrong on Reading, 1 wrong on Writing = 770 Reading
4 wrong on Math = 750 Math

May scores seem just as low as the March scores. I think College Board overestimated how well students would do on the new SAT. The concordance are seeming too harsh. I think colleges will just judge scores in context of all scores received from the entire applicant pool.
@itsgettingreal17 In addition, I think we are seeing many examples here on CC where student who have taken both ACT and new SAT are getting scores of 33-34 and 1500. The CB’s concordance with 1500 is 32. The actual data we are seeing would suggest the concordance is too harsh.
Does anyone think that schools will slightly deemphasize the SATs for the class of 2017 (high school) and refocus more on other aspects of the applications given 1) chaos over new SAT roll-out and 2) numerous recent cheating scandals on the SAT and ACT?
Regarding people posting, you cannot assume that the people posting here represent an unbiased sample. People are far more likely to complain about the concordance table than to agree with it.
@itsgettingreal17
The May 9th Concordance tables have a 1500 = 33. Is there a more recent set of Concordance tables?
I do agree with the harshness. My D missed 1 in writing, that converts to a 33. A perfect SAT score in the writing section is only a 34, how is that justified?
@londondad
I heard a college rep and the dean of an honors program infer that. However they are an holistic admissions school that already puts the SAT fourth or fifth on its importance list.
@CaucAsianDad Thanks. My DD has a 1400 new SAT and 760, 760, on 2 SAT II’s, so I think I will encourage her to stop testing and focus on other parts of the application. Any thoughts on that strategy? Thanks.
@londondad
My D is also at 1400 but with a lopsided 640M/760EBRW. She is aiming for (that is too weak a word, maybe desperate to get into) the honors program at the state flagship. A 1400 is probably good enough but she took the June sitting with the hopes of bringing her math up some.
She has an in-school SAT in October, but she needs to be focused on other things by then so the June sitting is her last big attempt. That is our strategy, I guess we will see how well it worked next Spring.
And yes, we are playing what-if with the ACT, but that ship has sailed.
@hebegebe Historically speaking, scores reported on CC are skewed high, not low.
For my DD - 1470 in March, retook it in June, hopefully went up a few tens - I’m wondering if in the fall she should take the ACT. Say she gets a 1520 on the June test. She’s not going to go suddenly get a 1600 if she takes it again. But if she takes the ACT and gets a 34, that might be easier for colleges to understand.
IOW, even though she’s taken 2 SATs, I’m not sure if the ACT ship has fully sailed…
What 960 considered,is it good ,or bad; because i feel so bad that my score is not good to get me in college(430R and 530M).
@s20013138 - What kinds of colleges were you hoping to get into? Most colleges in America would be happy to accept you with that score, but probably not any of the more selective schools.
I get a total score 1180 in the new sat and then i make the calculations by the calculator (1180/1600=x/2400) so the x =1770
But when i use the application sat converter i get 1640 and icannot under stand the defference can any one explain !!!
@ivysource, a score of 1540 on the new SAT concords to 34 ACT according to the concordance tables released by CB and not 33 ACT. In fact, 1520-1550 new SAT concords to 34 ACT.
@theshadow, my daughter finds the format of ACT easier to work with as she had practice via the Northwestern’s NUMATS program. She scored a 1540 on new SAT in March and a 34 ACT in Feb. Although, I think her true score is closer to 35 in ACT but somehow she messed up the science sub-scores (31) which dropped her composite score by a point. In all her practice tests at home, for ACT science sections, she had been scoring a 34-35. She will confirm this when the June test results come out. She wants to be STEM major so she chose to re-take ACT and also to improve her essay score which was miserable. No way, she will take SAT again. CB is pretty disappointing in terms of score delays and the concordance conundrum. They can’t even release state data for PSAT taken back in October 2015. How many months does it take, really?
@Yasmeen111, according to CB, the test was easier and the normally distributed curve has shifted to right! In other words if you compare population of students who scored at 1180 on the new SAT, compares to population of students who scored a 1640 on the old test (2400 scale) and not 1770 as you calculate it. The fact that they took away guessing penalty is partly to blame.
yes thought my sons 1150on the new SAT was ok. Nope. Not when it translates to a 1080 on the old SAT. We were told new scoring was not going to change. Well, that was a lie. So kids are applying to schools now and they have no idea if they are going to get in or not.
