So what do colleges get in the score reports sent by College Board? Do they get the curve and marking scheme? Does it make a difference to how one's score is looked at? For example, on my Oct SAT, I made only two mistakes on the CR section, and ended up with 740. >_< That's like -30 for one mistake, which is extraordinarily harsh in my view. How do colleges look at this sort of thing? Makes no difference I guess.......

The curve is based on the difficulty of the test. 740 with -2 means that the test was very easy, and that you would score the same if the test was harder and you missed more questions. In short, no colleges don’t look at this sort of thing.

Post script: 740 in CR is really good! Congrats. I think a 700+ in CR, and an 800 in M is very much Indian.

The curve is given wrt difficulty of the test to maintain the meaning of ‘standardised’.
Frankly speaking, although people do say that percentiles are looked at, yada yada, I personally doubt that they have much importance. End of the day, it is the score that matters. A -2 740 is harsh (Oct CR was ridiculously harsh) but it’s a good score!

If you’re interested in Dec CR curve, I had presented a list for scores above 700 on another thread after analysing the previous March 2010 discussion threads. (Since this test was same as US March 2010). Here-

Despite the idea that 700+ in CR is good, I don’t believe so. Every small thing matters. It was really really horrible…I was expecting a 2300+ and ended up nowhere. :(…and my grades are not exceptional either…I have no room for the smallest slip, but College Board messed everything up!!!

^Would you also happen to know the Math curve Pixie?? I’m very free with silly mistakes, and I really hope for leniency in the Math section.

I’m not really sure. Math has no leniency.
I do know that
-1 is a 770
-2 a 740

I only compiled the CR curve as I was curious to know how harsh it was. I think Math doesn’t really vary much every test. I suggest you look at the harshest curve in the list given at collegeboard professionals.
But haven’t you looked at the consolidated lists and estimated how many you got wrong? I already have a rough estimate of my score that way.

Well, my SAT II Math is 800. I suppose my SAT I Math doesn’t matter then right?

Some schools weigh subject tests more than reasoning while others don’t.

No, that is “very much CC”.

Don’t you guys know non-CC people who are also applying to the USA? Jesus Christ, many of my friends who are in the top 5-10% of their class + 95% in boards + sportsmen etc etc don’t get more than 1900 on the SAT! They are really intelligent etc…
The highest among my friends is a 2030/2400 and this one girl got a 2150/2400… That’s all
Indians on CC think that a 2200/2400 is a mediocre score. It is most definitely not a mediocre score by any means…
Good lord.

-1 is actually 780- october SAT math curve

quote
[/quote]
True that, yo. I got like 5 wrong or something and ended up with a 700

It depends from university to university.

^^We’re not discussing Oct Math curve.

Ani- but all the people who I know got into Ivies(keeping a parameter) are the ones with atleast a 2250. Indian competition is brutal. I think their perfectionism reflects in all spheres.
Anyway, I don’t feel like debating atm. Some other time?

I second Aniruddhc//

Open your eyes and see the world…not your computer screens…

Rofl!! I think everyone will support aniruddhc on his remarks. A 2200 is good by any means, but again, as pixie stated, 2250 seems to be the Ivy benchmark.

EXACTLY.
=

There’s no Ivy benchmark, man.
This guy I know is not even as good as any of you’ll and he still got into Stanford with a 2070. Go figure.

The all-time peak score at my previous school (IB) is a 2030.
The peak-score this year in ISC in the same school is 1950.

Think about it.

CC is the cream of the cream of the cream of the cream of the crop.

There’s no set benchmark for an SAT score. It’s not the only parameter in decision. I know of more 2200-2300’s rejected from Ivies than accepted. It’s not like there’s a certain SAT score that one has to cross. Everything else comes into play as well. What I meant to say was that the people I knew who got in were perfectionists in every field and although everything else was fine and dandy, they wanted this to be good as well.

Oct SAT had a very harsh score curve. I hope that colleges do consider that while looking at my scores :/

Wow, these posts are actually making me feel good… the “cream of the cream of the…” cracks me up…
yeah, the average at my skul too is like 1950!..

Dint give the oct sat but in june sat got a 770cr, 750m( i can never curse myself enough for those stupid silly mistekes…ugh)

Why,oh, why am I an international?? And why, pray are we never given equal weightage as our US counterparts??.. darn, :(…:(

Of course I didn’t mean a fixed score. I meant that when a person goes below 2200 and the like, his chances decrease at the same rate, until and unless he has something compelling elsewhere in his application. Obviously anyone by now knows that it’s a holistic process and that SAT itself doesn’t decide anything.

Proud to be an Indian.

Hopefully.

Yes it is haha
